EccentricDemandFilter: Send or tell me what your favorite non-traditional Christmas/Holiday songs are or the bunny gets it!
I like 'Back Door Santa,' (the Clarence Carter version, duh) (come to think of it, the whole Soul Christmas album is pretty good) and 'I've Got Some Presents For Santa,' and the Blowfly Christmas album, and Run-DMC's 'Christmas in Hollis,' and the Jurassic 5's 'Buck Santa.' DJ Riko has released maybe 4 or 5 annual Christmas mixes in his 'Merry Mixmas' series, and Stones Throw released a Christmas mix, by Peanut Butter Wolf, a year or two ago.
Prolly my favourite nontraditional Christmas song is still "Fairytale of New York". It is neck and neck with The Ramones' "Merry Christmas (I don't wanna fight tonight)".
I have others, but...I really wanted to be first to post those two, so I can be cool.
Anders F. Rönnbloms song "Det är inte snön som faller." which I only heard and saw once as it had this kickass animation to it and was aired on Swedish telly in the late-late 80's. Maybe 89? 90?(some screenshots here, you can buy it on video! god bless the intarweb I'm getting that!)
Despite only hearing it once, I remembered this part of the song, and when I get drunk around Xmas, I have been known to belt it out. Lyrics (in Swedish)
Vi öppnar dörren till en pissoar,
och där står självaste tomtefar
med lång näsa och en stråle som glittrar.
Han drar av sig skägget,
det ser ut som han fnittrar.
Han säger: "God jul! God jul! God jul! God jul! God jul! God jul! God jul! God jul!"
Det är inte snön som faller.
Det är nån annan tröst.
Picassos akrobater dansar över mitt bröst.
Det är inte snön som faller.
När jag behöver tröst.
När förklädda demokrater sätter kängan i mitt bröst.
"We open the door to a urinal
and there stands Santa himself
with a long nose, and a stream that glitters
he pulls off his beard - it looks like he's giggling
He says: Merry Xmas Merry Xmas! Merry Xmas Merry Xmas! Merry Xmas Merry Xmas! Merry Xmas Merry Xmas!
It isn't the snow that is falling It's someone elses SOUL
Picassos acrobats dance across my chest
It isn't the snow that's falling
when I need comfort
when disguised democrats stomp on my chest."
Ok, so I screwed up remembering the lines (now that I have looked it up) as I always thought it went "Det är inte nön som faller, det är någon annas själ" (It's someone elses soul) but the text on that webpage says it reads "It is some other kind of comfort". Which ryhmes but doesn't pack the punch my line did at all.
Damn--I don't have either on my computer, but the Kinks' 'Father Christmas' is of course a classic, and the Dance Hall Crashers' 'I Did it for the Toys' is a personal favourite. Oh--and I heartily second richat's nomination for 'Fairytale of New York'.
I haven't heard these two specifically, but I am recommending them instead of recommending a CD that I was associated with through work. Even so, Byzantine chant is neat.
What do you mean by "traditional" Christmas songs? I really dig the Oregon Repertory Singer's "The Glory Of Christmas" but those are very traditional songs done by an amazing choir.
I like that one by "The Waitresses", of course right now the name escapes me (Merry Christmas?) about the woman staying home down for the holidays and finally running into the guy she's been trying to hook up with all year. I also get quite a kick out of Adam Sandler's Hanaukah songs.
Thanks, people! I already have most of those. I'm trying to fill out my random Christmas song catalog. My favorite one is called Santacide by Toadies. It is about Santa destroying the Earth.
I like 'Father Christmas' by The Kinks:
Father christmas, give us some money
Dont mess around with those silly toys.
Well beat you up if you dont hand it over
*sniff*...so sweet.
And gorgeousness is 'I Believe in Father Christmas' by Emerson Lake and Palmer.
I also really like the following, and can YSI them if people are interested!
Robert Downey Jr's version of Joni Mitchell's "River"
Otis Redding's "Merry Christmas Baby"
The Ronette's "Frosty the Snowman"
The Band's "Christmas Must Be Tonight"
Steve Martin's SNL clip of "Five Christmas Wishes"
Ashtray Babyhead's "Winter Wonderland"
The Chieftain's with Jackson Browne doing "The Rebel Jesus"
Luscious Jackson's "Let it Snow" is pretty good too.
Jaymz Bee and the Royal Jelly Orchestra's whole record is pretty good, but I love "It's Christmastime (Oh Yeah)"
For pure oddness, it's hard to beat Antonio "Huggy Bear" Fargas' "It's Christmas".
Ashtray Babyhead is prolly one of my alltime favourite rockband names. They ended up changing it to something lame, but I can't recall what it was.
If you want some bizarre stuff thrown in there, sciurus, check out some of the songs April Winchell's collected - scroll to the bottom to where it says Seasonal Favorites. I guarantee you haven't heard some of those ;)
