This is sad news. And now that Lockwood and Henry Townsend are gone, save for David Honeyboy Edwards, that is about it for surviving pre-war country bluesmen. It's like the death of the last Civil War veteran.
Lockwood was likely the last person alive who had recorded a blues 78 for a commercial race records label before World War II. Mean Black Spider, Bluebird B-8877 was released July 30, 1941. David Edwards recorded Worried Life Blues for Alan Lomax in 1942 and that was not for a commercial label but rather the Library of Congress and that song was not released until well after the war.
