How do you pronounce "teh"? [More:] As in "teh cuteness." I say "tay."
I don't pronounce it. It's one of those things that's occasionally funny online, but if somebody used it in spoken conversation, I'd consider them a dippy motherfucker.

"teh". And yes, I've used it in conversation (some of the monsters in our D&D campaigns speak in l33t).

Dude, I'm calling a deprogrammer, who's gonna come with some whiskey and strippers.

I guess I meant how do you pronounce it in your head when you're reading it. I've never said it out loud either.

I pronounce it "te" with a soft "e" sound. Like "meh" but with a "t".

I was just thinking about this yesterday. I agree with LF. Thanks for asking.

I utter it like the last syllable of the verb in this sentence.

I pronounce it like "are we over this yet?"

In my neighborhood that's actually a practical question.

I don't really pronounce in my head while reading.

Really? Huh, that's interesting -- now I know what my next MetaChat post should be. :)

Just like it's spelled.

I correct it in my head when I'm reading it and don't say it out loud at all, It's not snobishness, it's proofreaders reflex. My typing notwithstanding, I am actually a fairly good proofreader.

However I would pronounce it just as it is spelled.

"teh"

I actually say this sort of thing all the time, but only to people who would get it. If someone says something corny or lame, I'll roll my eyes and say "ell oh ell." Recently when meeting someone unexpectedly, without thinking I said "oh em gee, double you tee eff!" I consider it ironic appropriation of something I consider to be the ultimate in stupidity, and I love making fun of human folly.

JanetLand Really? Huh, that's interesting -- now I know what my next MetaChat post should be.

There are lots of us non pronouncers out there. It came up a while ago on meta when it was discovered that many of us didn't know the user ID: Hat Maui was a play on mathowie.
posted by Mitheral 21 November | 16:56
teh, like meh. just the same way.

I'm definitely a pronouncer in my head. When I'm thinking seriously I think as a conversation as well.
posted by gaspode 21 November | 17:00
oh emm gee, Hat Maui is a play on mathowie? ;P

and it's pronounced just liked it's spelled, teh, dude.
posted by dabitch 21 November | 19:47
I never picked that up re Hat Maui. Obviously too intellectual for me.

I pronounce it just like it's spelled. Take that how you will.

I pronounce teh and meh differently. teh is more like "tay" and meh like ... well, "meh".

Maybe it's Maori influence ... Te News etc.
