Two lawns mowed; one leaky faucet replaced (I do my own stunts and my own plumbing);
one broken refrigerator dismantled, fixed, reassembled (I am SUCH a stud); 8 pepper plants in the ground; more herbs planted. Still need to do 3 loads of laundry and wash the dishes. (All the food spoiled when the fridge conked out, so there's a ton of tupperware needing to be washed. Gah.) All on a 90-degree day. So very tired.

Every Saturday I turn into a lifeless blob Same old story, almost every overcast Saturday, which is almost every Saturday, and often on Sundays as well....I know, I know, I need to get a weekend job or find a group that has activities on Saturday afternoon (I won't get up for a morning activity unless it's super-extra special). But as far as the group activity thing goes, how do I find a group like that? I can look up "knitting group", "hiking group" etc., but I can't look up "group that meets every Saturday afternoon."

Salmon recipes? I've gone my entire life thinking of salmon as one of the things I love, and yet, every time I cook it, I'm kinda meh about it. I often like it when I order it in restaurants, however, which leads me to believe it's a problem of technique. Or paid kitchen help. Thoughts?

Chuck Wepner (aka 'The Bayonne Bleeder') was the epitome of the slow, ponderous, ham & eggs white guy boxer. He's also one of a select few who can honestly say he's knocked out Muhammad Ali (youtube, knockout is at 4 mins. 40 secs in), was the last man to fight Ali's one-time nemesis Sonny Liston and to get in the ring with wrestling legend Andre The Giant. These exploits made the Jersey-bred Wepner the inspiration for Rocky Balboa. In a surreal twist, here Ali confronts the fictional incarnation of his nemesis.

A quandary which has vexed humankind for generations. I'm out on the porch doing my favorite thing listening to music, drinking whiskey and beer, reading and netsurfing. I also have one of my favorite snacks, a can of honey roasted peanuts and cashews. And there's too many peanuts and not enough cashews, like always. (I like peanuts, mind you). The cans labeled 'Mixed Nuts' are even worse, not enough peanuts, cashews and pecans, way too many filberts and especially almonds, which I loathe. Speaking of advice that sucks.... Ever get really irritated by someone who gives you advice that is not only unsolicited but that is so spectacularly bad that you just wonder how they couldn’t possibly have known better? I used to work with a woman who specialized in this sort of advice giving. She drove me — and the entire team we were on — absolutely mad, but there was one time when her advice giving afforded me endless amusement, and does to this day, nine years on. Hell, when I’m ninety I’ll still find this funny.Read more...
This makes me sad and angry Girls turned away from their prom for showing too much cleavage.
But, a slide show reveals a bunch of run-of-the-mill prom dresses, nothing out of the norm from my own prom a decade ago, or any other I'd imagine. It does, however, show us many girls who are either on the larger side or have been "blessed" as my mother calls it. A "blessing" that, IME, leads to looking like President of Boob Island no matter what you've got on.Read more...

appraising my house. so what? I bought a house last year and am in the process of doing some cosmetic work to it. I have a 30 year fixed mortgage and am on track to pay it off in 15. I looked at the purchase history and it was bought in 2004 for about 30 less than what I paid for it. So say I get the work done (restoring wood floors, remodeling the bathroom, possibly adding a second bathroom) and it turns out to be worth more than I paid for it, so what? What can I do with that? I'm not looking to flip the house. I'd rather stay put for quite some time. Is there any point to having it appraised again?

If you were the last person on earth... but somehow living comfortably (like Charleton Heston in the film Omega Man), you'd probably still enjoy taking photos. Does anonymity make us more agressive? Came across this on ALDaily, and though it's just a flashback to the Stanford Prison experiment, it contains an interesting comment about a deindividuation study where female students became more aggressive when they were made anonymous and encouraged to be cruel. Would it be totally weird to follow a professor around? Not "follow" like actually physically follow, but just take a bunch of classes with? Before Swan's End was mine.... My neighbour to the left tells me that about four years ago the city had to come in and clean the place up because it was such a dive. My neighbour to the right tells me that when he first moved in six months ago people would come by to smoke crack on his (street access) rooftop terrace — and jump across to my terrace to smoke there as well.
