20 April 2007

Shoot. I'd better increase the cardio and lay off the pasta. [More:]
I tested my blood sugar this morning at a skills fair we had at work and it was 108. All I had this morning was coffee with half and half, Splenda, and one caramel creme candy. Normal parameters for blood glucose is 60 to 90. Could one piece of candy raise it to 108? Maybe, but the number still freaks me a little. Diabetes is heinous. I don't want to be anywhere near out of range.
I don't know about blood sugar but I know that I'm a happier and healthier person when I get a few decent sweats in during the week.

Are you a whole grains gal? If not that's a good first step, more fiber and less blood sugar spikage. I read somewhere recently that white bread does absolutely nothing but cause your blood sugar to spike in a really scary way.

fenriq, I've never been a white bread eater. I've had whole wheat bread since birth. ;) Not to say I wouldn't eat a loaf of French bread in a sitting, but whole wheat bread has always been a staple.

I've failed an initial gestational diabetes screen when I was pregnant, but passed the second, more thorough test. I know I can be on the edge of high when I'm not taking good care of my nutrition.

108 isn't that high, but it raises flags. The normal range used to be 70-110, but it has since changed. I used to be in the 90s without fasting a few years ago, so this new number has me worried a little. I'm exercising sporadically these days and I've been getting a lot of takeout lunches. Plus, I gain around the abdominal area, so that doesn't help anything. Increased abdominal fat is linked to many bad things: high cholesterol, insulin resistance, type II diabetes. They've linked abdominal girth to increased risk for troke and heart attack, which seems like a no-brainer.

I'm not a tub, but I could stand to lose a few.

Wanna learn how to speedmarch? I burned of nearly 30 lbs and now am replacing my pants (1 pair per month) because nothing fits from the waist down anymore. (Except jeans -- nobody cares how sloppily jeans fit.)

Speedmarch? Sure, teach me.

I can only imagine what speedmarching looks like. Can I do it in the light of day? ;)

This sounds alot like the pear vs. apple shape debates.

I found that when I started working a desk job, I put on innertube weight pretty quickly. But then I started riding my bike to work and taking lunch rides and it really helped to cut down my mid-section again.

Also, I boycotted all fast food for nearly six months.

Good luck and it is good to have caught it early when you still have options to treat it without stepping over the border into diabetesland, hopefully!

I have been trying my best to start eating "well" although I am having only so-so results thus far. Difficult after eating terribly since my teenage years. I've lost twenty pounds since January though so I must be doing something right.

Not everyone who develops Type 2 is overweight. But do what you can to avoid it - more veggies, less carbs, make what carbs you do eat good carbs (whole grains, etc.), smaller portions and move your arse. I should take my own advice, but it's hard.

Isn't 108 only high if you took the fasting test?

From here:

A "random" blood glucose test taken at any time. A normal blood glucose range is in the low to mid 100s. A diagnosis of diabetes is made if your blood glucose reading is 200 mg/dl or higher and you have symptoms of disease such as fatigue, excessive urination, excessive thirst or unplanned weight loss.

Yes mudpuppie, but I was mostly fasting. (Is there such a thing?) I ate the one piece of candy an hour prior, and I've been in the mid nineties a couple hours after meals in the past. I'm not saying I have diabetes, but it's on the high end of normal. But maybe the candy was still kicking around.

I'm sure I'm being paranoid.
