1) Songs you’re embarrassed to admit you listen to? [More:]

2) And the album you listen to at the beginning of the day before you go to work, to start things off on the right foot.

1) Me: A thousand Miles *ducks*

2) And Murder Incorporated by Bruce Springsteen, followed by the rest of his Greatest Hits album, or the Greatest Hits album of Bob Dylan.
Bruce Springsteen is nothing to be embarassed about. and when it comes to entertainment, I don't believe in the concept of 'guilty pleasures.' If you dig something, you dig something.

1. I just downloaded "Girlfriend" by Avril Lavigne from iTunes today. Fuck you. Don't judge me.

2. Often, when I have to pick up a body in the middle of the night, I listen to "Theme from Shaft." Seriously. Just something that keeps me going when I'm exhausted.

You're a complicated man, CC.

I'm not embarrassed by anything I listen to, although I probably should be. I really don't give a rat's what people think of me, though.

Annie Lennox's "I Need A Man". It always makes me laugh.

I don't care if you won't talk with me
- you know I'm not that kind of girl.
And I don't care if you won't walk with me
- it don't give me such a thrill...

none.

And I'm including musicals.
posted by Miko 22 April | 21:59
Also, Disney's Beauty and the Beast soundtrack.

Oh no jon, No.1's only to be embarrased about. No.2 has got nothing to do with embarrassment. The boss rules.
posted by hadjiboy 22 April | 22:09
Fair enough, hadj. My uktimate point is, if something moves you, for whatever reason, there should be no guilt or embarassment involved.

I'm not embarrassed to admit it (like jon, I'm more than happy to claim every band/musician/song I like, even the ones that are supposedly uncool -- Bay City Rollers, anyone?), but I have found that friends are often quite surprised to find that I TOTALLY! LOVE! "Bringin' on the Heartache" by Def Leppard. (I even love it for the worst mixed metaphor in the history of rock: "a broken rose with laughin' eyes.")

I don't listen to any single thing in the morning these days, but there was a time in college where I listened to the Stone Roses' first album literally every single morning for about two years solid.

A good portion of the music I listen to is complete sugary pop crap. jonmc would drop dead if he came into possession of either of my mp3 players. It would make his head explode because I have a bunch of complete crap on there but it is mixed in with completely solid stuff by Dolly Parton and Hank Williams. haha.

And I downloaded Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" the same freaking day TPS linked to the video. hahahaha.

Beauty and the Beast's soundtrack is the greatest homage to the French Romantic period ever. No shame there.

On the other hand, I have "Genie in a Bottle" in my playlist.
posted by casarkos 22 April | 22:38
See. I'm not sure that I'm embarrassed by any of my music so much as I just wonder what people would think of it if they came across it if they picked up my ipod. I figure most people would just delete most of the stuff on it and start over. ahahaha.

I know that a lot of my musical taste is complete crap but it makes me happy so tough shit. hahaha. I have The Music Man Soundtrack (the Robert Preston version NOT the Matthew Broderick version) on it and that entire soundtrack just makes me giddy. And I also have The Ramones and Blondie on there. I think the best thing about the popularity of the portable players is that everyone can have what they want and nobody else has to hear it.
posted by fluffy battle kitten 22 April | 22:47
fluffy battle kitten, you'd be stunned at the amount of top 40 (admittedly from earlier eras, mostly) in my collection. I am an unabashed worshipper of the hit single.

I must admit that, when listening to music in my car, I will roll up the windows and put on my invisibility cloak if these songs come up:

1. "Breakfast at Tiffany's" by Deep Blue Something
2. Any and all songs by the Gin Blossoms
3. Patty Smyth and Don Henley's "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough"
4. "Save the Best for Last" by Vanessa Williams

All of those songs had weird pleasantness attached to them when I was at some point in my teens. Also, I had the sense to be embarrassed about liking them even then. Especially the Vanessa Williams.

If I were the type to be embarrassed I guess Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend. For a good morning start De Do Do Do De Da Da Da.

Call On Me - Eric Prydz

My excuse is that it is part of my exercise playlist; anything that gets my ginormous ass moving is exempt from aesthetic criticism.

Also I find it hilarious that Steve Winwood's (Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith, yes *THAT* Steve Winwood) most dreadful pop song was sampled into a eurodance loop.

I love "Breakfast at Tiffany's." I mean, it sucks as a song, but I looooove it.

I also love "A thousand miles," assuming it's that Scottish song that involves habering.

As for mornings... I'm still attached to a song by a local Boston band that pretty much defined my 20s. Much angst, in a handy hipster shell. :)

1) Perhaps this would be more aptly titled "Songs You Should Be Embarrassed About But Aren't":

The Detergents - "Double O Seven"

2) Virtually any non-opera classical work.

I paired "I Need a Man" with "Suffragette City" on a mixtape....gay lovers telling their ex: Fuck off, I'm straight now.

You'd be embaressed to own that album? Wha? It's a great album.

I just downloaded "Girlfriend" by Avril Lavigne from iTunes today. Fuck you. Don't judge me.

Meh, I have all 3 of her albums!

Wow, I guess the only things I'm embarrassed to admit to owning are those Avril albums and a couple of Britney and Christina albums. Oh and the spice girls first album. I really need to get rid of that

I don't tend to have an album that I'll play to get me in the mood - I'll just scroll through my iPod and see what takes my fancy. Recently it's been some Mastodon albums Veruca Salt's "Eight Arms To Hold You". Oh, and a load of Prince stuff.
posted by TheDonF 23 April | 01:46
occhi, the Scottish song is "500 Miles" and is completely awesome. "A Thousand Miles" is some piano schmaltz, I think.

I justified (no pun intended) my listening to Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me A River" to my friends by saying it was "really well produced." Which is true, but it's still embarrassing, no matter what anyone says. I have a whole guilty pleasure mix cd that I keep in my car but no one else ever hears.

Oh my god, is it that "500 Miles" that plays in the soundtrack of the Johnny Depp movie whose name I'm forgetting right now. He plays a Buster Keaton type eccentric street performer in that, and the song IS Awesome.

Is it the one sung by The Proclaimers?

I'm really into Elliott Yamin's album at the moment. I think he's probably one of the best Idol contestants ever, and certainly one of the bravest, musically, in terms of his song choices during the show.

His album does not disappoint. Fabulous voice. Great songs. I'd love to see him live at the Jazz Cafe or Ronnie Scotts.

On the subject of Idol contestants, on a whim I recently got an album by Low Level Flight. Turns out that the main guy was the first winner of Canadian Idol. If I'd had known that at the time, I wouldn't have ordered it, but I'm glad I did as it's pretty good.

Why be embarrassed about listening to, and even singing along with, Disney musicals? Some of 'em have won awards and nominations.
posted by PaxDigita 23 April | 07:25
1. I adore anything by Andy Williams or Jim Nabors. But happily I'm too old to be embarrassed by it.

2. I never listen to music in the morning before I go to work. I can't stand it -- until my day gets going any music is just cacophony.

there was a time in college where I listened to the Stone Roses' first album literally every single morning for about two years solid.

I lived in a house with four housemates for about 6 months, and every morning began with "Superstitious." Now that's a way to start a day.

Andy Williams...yeah, I woke up one morning dreaming of the song "Happy Heart," and it was an earwig for days afterward. But that, that and the Doors' "The Crystal Ship" were two of the first pop songs I ever really liked.
posted by PaxDigita 23 April | 09:09
Happy Heart is fantastic! Though after seeing Shallow Grave (which is great, btw), I associate it with schadenfreude rather than actual happiness.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who likes "Girlfriend".

And I'm not embarrassed of my undying love for '80s pop and '70s disco.

*hugs Duran Duran albums to chest, glares at jonmc*

I always love it when the theme to H.R. Pufinstuf comes up on my MP3 player and I have it hooked to the stereo in my pickup truck. I wonder what the people out on the sidewalk think.

Though after seeing Shallow Grave...

Considering what Blue Velvet did to song if the same name and how I can't hear "Singin' in the Rain" without remembering a horrifying rape scene...thanks for the warning!

I can't even compute why this would be embarrassing... it's one of the greatest albums (and songs) of the '90s. Seriously. Spectacular, brilliant record.

More Than I Can Say

I like the band Bread.

I used to love the song Love and Affection by Nelson. I have it loaded on my iPod.

I like a ton of dorky songs.

Got a big plan, this mindset maybe its right
At the right place and right time, maybe tonight
And the whisper or handshake sending a sign
Wanna make out and kiss hard, wait nevermind

Late night, and passing, mention it flipped her
Best friend, who knows saying maybe it slipped
But the slip turns to terror and a crush to light
When she walked in, he throws up, believe its the fright

Its cute in a way, till you cannot speak
And you leave to have a cigarette, your knees get weak
An escape is just a nod and a casual wave
Obsessed about it, heavy for the next two days

It's only just a crush, it'll go away
It's just like all the others it'll go away
Or maybe this is danger and you just don't know
You pray it all away but it continues to grow

I want to hold you close
Skin pressed against me tight
Lie still, and close your eyes girl
So lovely, it feels so right

I want to hold you close
Soft breasts, beating heart
As I whisper in your ear

I want to f*cking tear you apart

Then he walked up and told her, thinking that he'd passed
And they talked and looked away a lot, doing the dance
Her hand brushed up against his, she left it there
Told him how she felt and then they locked in a stare

They took a step back, thought about it, what should they do
Cause theres always repercussions when you're dating in school
But their lips met, and reservations started to pass
Whether this was just an evening or a thing that would last

Either way he wanted her and this was bad
He wanted to do things to her it was making him crazy
Now a little crush turned into a like
And now he wants to grab her by the hair and tell her

I want to hold you close
Skin pressed against me tight
Lie still, and close your eyes girl
So lovely, it feels so right

I want to hold you close
Soft breasts, beating heart
As I whisper in your ear
I want to f*cking tear you apart

(hanging. head. in. shame.)

*is mystified at embarrassment over "Girlfriend"*

Meh. Science Girl gives me shit for liking the odd bit of hair metal ("Round and Round" by Ratt is a fave), I give her shit for liking Dee Lite (even though I gave her the CD one year at Xmas). Neither of us is embarrassed, nor should we be. You like what you like.
