Summer Music: Your Favorites? [More:] For some of you it's probably pretty warm out. For the rest of us, it's going to be getting warm sooner or later. Hopefully. :(

But in the meantime, what are some of your favorite summer-related songs? Songs about summer, songs with "summer" in the title, or songs that just remind you of summer; the tunes you'd love to listen to on the beach, on the porch with a nice glass of lemonade or ice tea, or just cruising down the road with the windows down. Songs that make you feel happy, energetic, nostalgic... whatever. For example, I'm much more apt to listen to AC/DC (at unhealthy volumes, too) in the summer than in any other season. They're just summer-ish.

I'll list a few of my favorites:
Mungo Jerry - In the Summertime
Snoop Dogg vs James Blunt - Another Beautiful Summer (mashup)
The Kinks - Sunny Afternoon
Jackpot - Whiskey
Tom Waits - How's It Gonna End
Bedouin Soundclash - When The Night Feels My Song

I know there are lots more, but that’s all I can think of/find at the moment.

**NOTE: This may or may not have something do with a radio show that I may or may not do sometime around May-Juneish dedicated to it (friggin finally) being summer. However, this most likely depends on how much participation I get in this thread. I don't want it to just be my favorite summer-songs, I want yours as well. :)**
Okay, but just don't announce which of the songs in the thread are going into your radio broadcast, because that's against da rules.

love this thread topic!

for me the #1 alltime song dating myself here, heh! is...

Tears for Fears - Everybody Wants to Rule the World

followed by, in no particular order:

Belle & Sebastian - If She Wants Me
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Down On The Corner
Tom Petty - Free Falling
Lo Fidelity Allstars - Battleflag
Iron & Wine - Woman King
Blur - Girls and Boys
Harvey Danger - Happiness Writes White
Elton John - Bennie & the Jets
The Beatles - Ob La Di, Ob La Da
The Killers - Mr. Brightside
Jimmy Eat World - The Middle
Howard Jones - New Song
Duran Duran - Rio

and no, my taste in music isn't superficial... not in the least... =P

i wish i had my mac here, cos anytime someone asks a question like this and i dont have my library available to look at, means i tend to go blank.

and what box said. frisbeegirl's mongo upload included the alltime best version i've ever heard of 'summertime', in french, even.

R. Kelly's Ignition Remix is a seriously brilliant song for all seasons, but it's mostly very summery. Play it with the Escalade windows down.
Hanoi Rocks - Malibu Beach Nightmare
Rolling Stones - Tumbling Dice
Van Halen - Dance the Night Away, Panama
Tenor Saw - Ring the Alarm
Frankie Smith - Double Dutch Bus
Foggy Mountain Breakdown - Flatt & Scruggs
Bob Marley - Stir it Up
Thin Lizzy - Cowboy Song
just about any Ramones song.

Eddie Cochran - Summertime Blues
Lovin' Spoonful - Summer In The City
War - Summer

Van Halen - Beautiful Girls
Sublime - What I Got
Beach Boys - I Get Around
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Whiskey Rock-a Roller
posted by jonmc 06 April | 16:49
Ah, yeah, Beautiful Girls. I'll throw that one in there for me too.
posted by Hellbient 06 April | 17:05
pfft... i knew someone would say 'beach boys'.

i think the combo of beach boys, war and bob marley kind of *defines* iconic summer beach party music. sure i like all 3 and i have several war albums but to me citing them feels sorta lazy. ok not lazy, maybe i'm just mad i didn't think of it... but it's definitely low hanging fruit. okay yea, sure, what would a summer mix be without some surf and stoner music?

o and i guess we could include jimmy buffet on that list too, notwitstanding i loathe parrotheads with about the same degree of loathe i (usually) reserve for the deadheads and phish bait here in boulder.

here's one i forgot:

Jesus Jones - International Bright Young Thing

My brain is too swiss-cheesey at the moment to bust out a list, but I can tell you that the two genres that say summer to me are psychedelia and power pop.

The stuff the rest of y'all like to hate: Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville and almost anything by the Eagles. Yes, of course the Beach Boys, almost anything by the Go-Gos, Cruel Summer by Bananarama, Elton John stuff from the '70s, Brown-eyed Girl by Van Morrison, You Sexy Thing by Hot Chocolate. Songs by Kansas, America, the Bee Gees, the Rolling Stones, Donna Summer, Blondie. I think most of what comes to mind is what I was hearing in the '70s - stuff my brothers and mum played, stuff I heard on the jukeboxes at the bars my mum frequented*.

The rules were rather loose on the weekends due to the softball teams. They'd play their games and everyone would head back to the bar(s) and get beers for the adults and sodas for the kids. We'd be there for a couple hours before heading home (usually just outside with the front door propped open, the jukebox cranked up and a ton of kids sitting on the dirty sidewalk; we'd wander in for a bathroom break or to get a refill).

Dick Dale.
Anything Salsa-ish.

They always play Bob Marley on the ski slopes where I ski, so now I associate him with all board sports.

Oh snap. Deborah. That gives me an idea.

Maybe if an admin/mod/whatever we call them could add this to my More Inside description, that'd be great:

If you have a specific memory that goes with a song you suggest, why not share it with us! I'm a sucker for stuff like that, and a little background on why that song means something to you would be nice.

"Summer Breeze" by Seals and Crofts (I think). I remember riding in the back of my parent's VW bus, looking up at the stars, coming back from the boardwalk.

Anything by the Cars. I wore out a couple of their cassettes in my first car. The wind in my hair (it didn't have AC), the music turned up..heaven!

"Boys of Summer", "Summer of 69", and add me to the list of Jimmy Buffet fans. I love them all!

Good reminder, hellbient, Tenor Saw, indeed. Don't forget, Sister Nancy — What a Bam Bom.

yeah I'm hating on Jimmy Buffet. ack.
Love Van Morrison's TB Sheets. Beautiful. The rest, meh.

I prefer Girls Aloud, not GoGo's. Their 'Wake Me Up', 'Love Machine' are great.

I'll add,
Amadou & Mariam — La Triste R้alit้, F๊te au Village. Love'em. They're from Mali, you could feel the heat and taste the dust. Wicked. You may have heard them with Manu Chao — Senegal Fast Food.
Je Pense a Toi. Sweeet.
Alpha Blondy — Come Back Jesus, Sweet Fanta Diallo, Sebe Allah Ye
Majbour — Addio A Cheyenne ]a tip to Ennio Morricone[

okay. i'm home. i'm at my mac. life is good.

CitrusFreak, in homage to your followup i'll tell you exactly what each of these songs makes me think about:

The Crystal Method - Over The Line
this is just a summery grooving techno tune that reminds me of colorful warm summer sunsets and the smell of pine trees. i dated a guy with a honda S2000 and we'd drop the top, blast this CD and go cruising up the canyons on hot summer evenings.

The Dead Milkmen - Bitchin Camaro
i discoverd this gem the first summer i moved out of my mom's place. this song represents that feeling of utter freedom and mild panic at having to make my own way in the world. my first 'real' job. my first set of roommates. skateboarding to work and practising tricks on every curb, railing and staircase within reach. being a pain in the ass to mall rent-a-cops. picking scabs. putting 'skateboarding is not a crime' stickers on every damn thing i could find. good times.

Tears for Fears - Everybody Wants to Rule the World
as i mentioned before, this song just really encapsulates 'summer' for me. the dreamy vocals, the memories of watching the video with my best friend, hanging out at the dairy queen with my first really serious boyfriend, and that whole feeling of endless hope and potential you have throughout your senior year in high school

The Apples in Stereo - Energy
my SO turned me onto this band last summer, back before we were dating. he burned me some songs and this one in particular became my 'summer 2006' anthem. he took me to see them live last sunday, incredible show. also, not only are AiS a denver band, but this song in particular not only sums up our relationship, it also brings to mind images of the denver cruise, and all the close friendships i've formed with the odd, wonderful, eclectic bunch of bike nerds who belong to it.
