"In 1504, Michelangelo was commissioned by the Republic of Florence to do just that. The result was David.

When asked how he created such a breathtaking sculpture, Michelangelo replied that David already existed, trapped inside the nine-ton piece of solid marble; "I just got rid of everything that wasn't David."
