05 April 2007

Today the egg came first. [More:]

It's such a pleasure having this week off. This afternoon I made a shisel of egg salad, mit mayo, Miracle Whip, salt, pepper, onion powder, a smidgen of mustard and a dash of hot sauce (as a sandwich, it reduced jon to grunts). Later this afternoon, I plan to roast a chicken, one of those plump Perdue ovenstuffers. When I'm not exhausted, I find I like to cook. I don't even mind the dishes. (Blueberry vodka with cranberry, mango, and a squeeze of lime makes a fine afternoon cocktail, by the by.)

Bonus story: Speaking of recipes, my student with the disturbing rabbit-eye tale told me about a recipe her grandmother had for the lovelorn. Seems if a gal stirs a little menstrual blood in her desired's rice and beans, it makes her irresistable to him. My student swears she's seen it work for the most "ugnoxious" woman in DR whose husband now can't get enough of her.

(We were reading The Crucible, you see, and discussing whether witches really exist; quite a few of my students believe they do. They also giggled irresistably whenever Tituba's name was mentioned. Apparently, it means "woman with big breasts" in spanish.)
Pips, that's fully disgusting. But it was worth reading to learn the word "ugnoxious." (And for the cocktail recipe.)

Huh. We might need a "what would you be drinking if you weren't working" thread. My contribution: Black Bush and a little soda, no ice.

mmm roast chicken.

I'd be drinking Pimms and ginger ale, lots of fruit in there too, please.

pax: Bushmills is Protestant whiskey, pal. Jamesons, man, Jamesons.

Pips, have you tried the Absolut Pear vodka? It's heaven!
posted by youngergirl44 05 April | 14:20
Oooo, pear vodka. I love pear.

(What? No Bloody Mary's? ; )
posted by Pips 05 April | 14:23
I want to try that pear vodka, but the commercial with the snake freaks me out. They should really put a NSFRoM (not safe for rossi or mudpuppie) warning before they show one of those slithery bastards defiling perfectly good booze.
posted by jrossi4r 05 April | 14:24
Reading this made me go have a slug of Jamesons. God what a wonderful afterglow that whiskey has, especially chased with some Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout.

(I'll try not to pass out into the chicken, honey)
posted by jonmc 05 April | 14:28
God, rossi, thank you. That commercial has been everywhere lately. It's almost put me off drinking.

Whiskey knows no religious affiliaton Jon lad, it's ok to drink the Bush. I drink Jameson's because it has a rougher edge, Bushmill's is too smooth for me. If I wasn't working and (possibly if this day gets any more stupid) I would be drinking setups: Pints of Guinness and Jameson's neat on the side. I wish I could be more creative, but that is basically what I like to drink these days. Maybe cold Red Stipes and some nice curry goat if it wasn't so fucking cold out.

I know. I was quoting Jimmy McNulty. (and if you weren't working, I'd invite you out to drink some Jamesons and eat some chicken and listen to some old-school jams, my man)

Bottle of wine. White, for a change.

I wonder if there's a male equivalent to the menstrual blood stirring thing? Actually, no, I don't want to think about that. Ewwww.
posted by TheDonF 05 April | 14:35
One time I tried to run that Bushmill's is an orange drink line on my friend from Dublin and he said "Never you mind, I've got a dispensation from me feckin' bishop." I've always wanted to use that line, but I like the Jameson's too much for it to come up.

The menstrual blood thing is an oooooooold charm. I've never actually tried it - ewwwwww - but it is supposed to be nearly foolproof.

Hmmmmm. Perhaps. . . no. No, that would be wrong. ;-)

Oh and as for a drink, these days I'm doing vodka and cranberry and a little soda and a wedge of lime. My bartending friend says he'll name it after me.

I've been going back and forth lately between imperial stouts and IPAs.

Doesn't it already have a name, mgl? I could've sworn that was a Cape Codder or a Sea Breeze or something (admittedly, mixed drinks aren't my strong suit).

Hey, mygoth, how d'ya think I got jon to the alter? ; )

My blueberry vodka with cranberry, mango, and lime, by the by, I call a Miami Cape Cod.
posted by Pips 05 April | 14:45
Yeah, I thought it was a sea breeze or something too, but then the bartender said not. Admittedly, mixed drinks aren't his strong suit either.

I call a Miami Cape Cod.

Alternate Name: Homestead Hurricane.
posted by jonmc 05 April | 14:48
I've tried it. It worked. Gumbo. And Spaghetti sauce. I can't prove cause and effect, maybe I the charm was unnecessary.

What? I went to school in New Orleans, and I'm a Loon for Lust.

I'd like to drink my face off right about now. I don't care what's being served.
posted by rainbaby 05 April | 14:50
mmm seabreezes have grapefruit juice in them, IIRC.
posted by gaspode 05 April | 14:50
According to Wikipedia, a Sea Breeze is vodka, cranberry juice and grapefruit juice, usually with a lime wedge, while a Cape Codder is vodka, lime juice, cranberry juice and sugar. (And a Madras is vodka, cranberry juice and orange juice. Add peach schnapps to a Madras and you get a Sex on the Beach. There's a lot of stuff about booze in Wikipedia.)

I want a vodka drink with acai juice, or that pomegranate liqeur that one of my coworkers keeps trying to sell me on, or both.

Okay, back.

jonmc, I like Jameson's too, but I'm no longer a Papist anyhow. Bushmill's 10 Year Old Malt's right nice. Was a Scotch drinker previously.

Partial to black and tans occasionally. Beer and I aren't such close friends anymore, though.

A glass of two-buck Chuck shiraz before bed.

posted by PaxDigita 05 April | 14:57
pax: I agree, the 10 year old Bushmills is indeed good. But Jamesons is on a whole other level.
posted by jonmc 05 April | 14:59
There's certainly something to be said about shots of Jameson. I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it... At least I'm going to the bar tonight and can have some. I think we ran out at home and just have Bushmills now. I stole a Jameson banner on St. Patrick's day.

If you can't find a bottle of Absolut Pear in NY, I will mail you one, Pips. You *must* have it! It's the first bottle of hard liquor I've finished on my own, it only took about four days.

If I'm ever in NY I want to come drinkin' and eatin' with you two!

Hey, that's my drink, too! But I drink it at home, so name is no issue.

Oh, and I prefer a big squeeze of lemon to the lime. Fresh!

The chicky's in zee oven, all nice an' seasoned. It's pupik should pop about seven o'clock. With broccoli cheddar rice and cauliflower with cheese sauce, should be quite the feast.

(anytime, youngergirl... you may never be the same! ; )

((oh, and I think I saw that pear vodka at our local liquor store... appreciate the offer, though...))

I drank myself silly on Jamesons just last night. First time I've ordered a double, ever.

And the second time.

As for the "male equivalent," in China it is believed that a little bit of the obvious answer will do it. Could well be some kind of evolutionary explanation why either one might work.

Dinner tonight: Boboli pizza shell (don't want to clean up any flour messes) with soft goat cheese spread out first, a layer of caramelized onions, a sprinkling of fried fresh sage, shredded duck confit, and a little crumbly goat cheese on top.

Cranberry juice usually has sugar added--so you don't need to put it in the Cape Cod.

Marjane Satrapi's Embroideries has a sequence where a friend of a friend visited a white witch to keep her lover--the ritual involved his semen, tea and a key.

Damnit, I liked rice and beans.

Until now.
