btw -- essexjan, are you doin' better today? Put that felt on the roof yet?
I'm in a similar sitch at work here -- my cubicle is immediately opposite the door to the copier/fax/workroom, so I get all the machine noise, the loud bull$hit "How'd the weekend go?" convos, etc. I've got a small wide-angle rearview mirror atop one of my monitors, and I have to wear "Mickey Mouse" isolaton-type 'phones and keep music going on them in self-defense.
Wow, ej, it'd suck turnips to work where you do....I'd have to emulate the Navy's submarine community and hang "THINK QUIET" signs at eye level or something. And they can take my Captain Underpants stuffed toy (gift from my son) off the top of my monitor over my dead body.
I also have an Eric Cantona Corinthian figure which sits on my computer. We are supposed to keep our desks looking uniform, so anyone can use them and know where everything is. I hate that. I keep sneaking more and more things in, like a little plaque with the Serenity Prayer on it, a beautiful jar from Spain that I keep pens and stuff in and my own calendar. Other people bring bits and bobs in too. Our manager lets it go as long as nobody goes over the top. Anyway, he can't complain. After all, he is responsible for the presence of Humptse in our team.
Oh, I feel this - I sit in a corner and my monitor faces out into a shared office area, so everyone can see what's on my screen (which is why I used to block images from metachat.org). We can do whatever we want with our desks, but our computers are locked up like fort knox, which is even worse for me, because I'm a tidy desk person, but I like to have my electronic stuff with me wherever I go.
