18 April 2007

mom's birthday is coming up and i'm at a loss[More:] as nothing ever seems good enough unless it's a Baccarat vase or the perfect Birkin bag, and i just can't fund a Bergdorf Goodman spree, besides the whole impracticality aspect of it all.
She's not the flibbertygibbet she use to be but she is still a girly girl at sixtymumble and i think feeling freer to be a girly girl. i told her about TPS' pink phone and dad's on it or a red one. What i can do, i have no idea, as any delectable dessert type thing i could make she has an conditioned 80s diet response to, unless truly delicious...

i have toyed with the idea of getting her a good real hair wig to let her let her hair relax (long story) but it's nearly summer. Cat clothing is another option but, let's face it, the cats won't really wear it any more than any novelty item. i have NO idea what to do but i must do a token something.
Handmade things have no true appeal no matter how high the quality, unless there is a novelty appeal, and yet, she doesn't get cheese or camp unless pushed to an extreme, which is basically as disposable as a half hearted handmade card.

The default is a crazy luscious dessert as she does have a thing for luscious dessert, or something precious like handmade flowers.

Otherwise, blah. Hi. What are you up to?
Tonight's Night Bus mojito spring special continues with the special Spring Encouragement Special of fruity margarita from watermelon to mango to kiwi. The chocolate on the go special is six truffles with fruit fillings or the Cosmic Brownie Basket, with three giant pot filled brownies and two confetti sticks.
All smart drink half off.
Pastis!

Pastis or Pastis?
She doesn't drink. If only.
i can only imagine what she is like drunk.
And i don't want to.

How about an afternoon at a day spa? Girly-girls seem to like that sort of thing.

There isn't a reputable spa close as far as i know, and she would find that bothersome unless there was some special time machine involved. Or a dishwashing monkey that never poops.

a dishwashing monkey that never poops

Hell, I want one of those.

The all day masturbating is still unseemly.

As long as it doesn't interfere with the dishwashing, monkey's free time is none of my affair. And vice versa.
posted by bmarkey 18 April | 21:51
Mom's got a dishwasher, but i'll get you the number of a monkey.
Sorry, but everybody poops. And monkeys throw it. Kinda worth doing your own dishes, i say.

I guess your mention of mojitos and margaritas threw me.

i'd like to invite all absinthe gifts in my direction for future reference.
posted by ethylene 18 April | 22:03
Yeah, I see your point, eth. Hey, does your mom garden? Lots of good gift ideas there. What does she like, aside from the high-end stuff?
posted by bmarkey 18 April | 22:04
Not really a gardener, has had plant hobbies. She's a hard one to shop for because if she wants something, she'll pretty much get it herself.
She has a wacky streak but i have no idea. She's moving out of a Martha foodie phase.

Would something like this be of interest?
posted by bmarkey 18 April | 22:16
She's not crafty like that. Thanks for trying.
What's been up with you, bmarkey?
Cocktail?
posted by ethylene 18 April | 22:17
Yeah, if you've still got some mojitos. As for what's up, not much. Just another of the working poor. How's with you?
posted by bmarkey 18 April | 22:19
Meh. Feh. Bleh.
And so it goes.
Actually, i am totally procrastinating.

Meh. Feh. Bleh.

Yeah, I heard that. I gotta win the lotto, but soon.
posted by bmarkey 18 April | 22:30
i just saw this so now i wanna know how much button machines are. Not for her, for me.
posted by ethylene 18 April | 22:31
Btw, the mojitos are good. Too good. i have to make them less tasty or weaker.
We must start a grand money making scheme.
Costumes optional.

Button machines. I have a friend in Austin who has one - I recall her having trouble getting the pins to stay on the buttons. Solve that problem and you'll be laughing.

Pink phone, woo woo!

And I feel your pain on the Mom gift. My Mom also has very high taste. I do what I can.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 18 April | 22:39
Pink, what brand is your phone?
posted by ethylene 18 April | 22:47
It's a Motorola RAZOR. I've heard bad things about it (a lot of people seem to think it's crap), but mine has been great so far and I got it for $30 with a contract renewal, so eh.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 18 April | 23:41
There's also a pink Motorola PEBL, and they are all on sale now, unlocked @ 150. They got great reviews, and I nearly got a green one, but decided on a phone w/ FM radio.

My Mom is hard to gift. One of my best was to get my sibs to pitch in on a Flower-of-the-month deal, so the gift lasted a year. I also gave her a Birthday Book, a nice calendar for tracking birthdays, and she still mentions how much she likes it.

We gave my mother a snazzy picnic-in-a-backpack package, which effectively sent the message that she's not too old to get out and have some fun.

I made my mom a calendar out of my flickr photos for christmas and she loved it. She also liked blank notecards (she's a proper lady; she sends little hand written notes all. the. time.) that I printed at home with some of my flower pictures, particularly because I put a little cheesy yet oh so snobby copyright thing on the backs of all them "specially designed & printed for MOM NAME by MyLanguishingDesignCompany".

See, if you use photos, or scans of your work or something, then it doesn't look all "handmade" as in amateur, as in my mom doesn't really like it either although she'll dutifully display it for a while before it finds its way into the hall closet.
