Jumpin Jeebus! My cell phone picked a bad time to frizzle out. I was trying to hold out till July/August and see what folks think of the iPhone. Now I have to get something ASAP. Or can I live phoneless till June...?
You could go Virgin in the interim.

There's a joke in here somewhere, I just know it... but it's early and I haven't had any coffee yet. Anyone?

I haven't had a cell phone for about 2 months and I love it, to tell the truth. My son's crapped out and I lent him mine, and then never got around to buying another one.

I usually have at least 3 working phones I can pop my sim into if my current one decides to die. This is because I buy phones way more frequently than I need to. It is an expensive stupid habit.

I have a Virgin phone and I loves it! I have the pay-as-you-go plan since I rarely use it and it costs me just over $100 for the year. Also, the phone was cheap.

I've had to deal with Virgin customer service twice and both times were exceptionally easy and they corrected a mistake that turned out to be all my fault without even batting an eye. I am now a loyal Virgin customer. I love you Richard Branson!

Interesting... I didn't even know Virgin was doing mobile. Do they have short-term contracts or something?

I've got the UK Virgin pay as you go phone, and it's great, although very expensive to use abroad. When I'm in NY in June I'll look into buying a cheap pay as you go mobile just to use when I'm in the States.

The pay-as-you-go is no contract, I dislike contracts and will do everything in my power to avoid them. I'm not sure about the monthly plan but you can check on their website.

EJ: you might wanna check out that website then as well for your NYC trip.

In the UK I can buy a Vigin phone in a Virgin Megastore. Is it the same in the US? I can just walk into a Virgin Megastore and walk out with a phone?

Yeah, except more places sell them like BestBuy and Futureshop (Cdn only I think). Basically most places that sell cell phones will have a Virgin section.

You can get Virgin no-contract phones in the U.S. at Target. I got my mom one for emergencies.

Do I have to register the phone? Will it matter that I don't have a US address? (If I have to give an address, I can always give Diane's in OH, but would prefer to just buy the phone and walk out with it.)

I didn't give an address with mine, just a credit card number. I did all the stuff online too so that was a plus.

I can't do it online, there's nowhere they can FedEx the phone to, so I'll do it instore when I get to NYC.

I have a TracFone. They know nothing about me except the number on the back of phone card I bought. You can register, but it's not needed and really just as easy to re-up the minutes without registering.

I meant I did all my activation nonsense online. I bought the phone at Futureshop for $100. It came with $10 of credit, I was happy.

You can buy an unlocked phone on ebay. My phone was starting to fall apart, so I got a new phone last month. It has an fm radio, which I am totally loving for walking to work. I get an extra 8 minutes of NPR. Now my brainssss are huge and full of newssss. in calm voices, of course.
