27 April 2007

Last day at the job. [More:]I've been here for a little over a year. As recently as eight weeks ago, there was talk of converting me over to FTE, but five weeks ago, they decided they wouldn't finish this project nor keep me (nor the other business analyst, who's already found her next job).

Not sure what’ll happen next; I’ll probably be “on the beach” for a couple of weeks, given the slow way the job-search-and-interview wheels seem to grind. I’m going to set up Ubuntu Linux on a laptop I got last month. There’s a web site at church that needs revamping, and I can start exploring how we’ll do that. Beyond which, I sure hope I don’t wind up proofreading M&Ms out of sheer boredom.

My résumé's on some desks around town, but I've interviewed only with recruiters so far -- no hiring managers have asked to speak with me. I wish this process were a little faster and surer. And so does my checking account.

Meanwhile, next Friday's the end of my marriage, too. Lotsa transitions coming close together.
Let's hope this opens the door to lots of good opportunities for you, Pax - in both areas of your life. Best of luck.

Best of luck to you, Pax.

I find walking on wintry beaches to be soothing for these sorts of situations, though I don't do so as often as I should. And I can't remember where you are geographically, so maybe that won't work anyway. But walks, by the water or through the trees, are good.

Pax, all the best to you. Enjoy your time off. Hopefully it will be short-lived.

Thx, folx.

Pretty far from beaches, wintry or otherwise -- Columbus, Ohio. There is water and there are trees, though, and I know a couple of good places for a refreshing stroll this afternoon, and sit and smoke my pipe and be all reflective and stuff.. Maybe sit in the dark having a quiet drink before bed, too.

A meeting in 10 min., then supposedly lunch w/ the acct mgr from my contracting company, then...pack. I have my own 21" monitor to get from here out to the car -- oof!

Watch your back with that monitor! And good luck with the transitional period. I hope you enjoy at least some part of it, and that it is exactly the right length for you. All transitions are opportunities. It's weird sometimes the hollowness or... stillness (not quite sadness) that comes over us when huge changes are happening around us. Then you find yourself back in the midstream of your life, paddling for all you're worth, wondering what happened :)

It's no wintry beach, but Highbanks Metropark is pretty dang nice. Ooh, or the Park of Roses in Clintonville.

Good luck, Pax. Reflection is all well and good, and even necessary, but taking advantage of downtime to network and prospect, even if those activities simply consist of hitting some Chamber of Commerce meetings, and various software user groups for products which interest you, can be surprisingly fruitful.

Better Park of Roses link.

Hmph, freedom is a double-edged sword, isn't it? Enjoy this time while you can! And best of luck to you.

Almost time for the Rose Festival at Park of the Roses, innit, box? That warm May air scented with hundreds of thousands of them...amazing.

Highbanks is another venue I've thought about trying speedmarching because of the hills -- Sharon Woods is seeming a little flat and boring for my taste. When I really feel like phoning it in, I go to Hoover Reservoir.

Have been networking to the extent available -- some of it's working, but I still need to get myself in front of a mgr or two for an interview.

Good luck, Pax! I hope you find something you love, and that the process isn't a huge PIA. From what I know of you, you seem like a great catch for a lucky employer.

Best of luck, Pax.

PIA, I can cope with. Open-ended, not so much. I already have the crudely lettered cardboard sign ready: WILL ANALYZE CODE FOR SUSHI.

Here's to better days for you, Pax.

That picture that went round the web a few years ago of the guy holding the sign saying "Will code HTML for food" always made me feel very sad.

I know endless temping can be demoralizing. Best of luck on finding something permanent.
