Uh, oh. We just had word from our office in Cairns that the hospital has cancelled all operations and that waterfront areas are being evacuated by emergency services. Probably nothing will come of it, but you never know.
Looks like it fizzled into nothing after all. Well, not if you live in the Solomon Islands, but for Australia it seems to be fine. Two of the people in our meeting this morning, who were teleconferencing in, were absent because the offices in Cairns had been evacuated and Townsville staff were told to go home.
Anyway, when I got back to my desk, it was all dry, so everything seems to be OK.
Now that Australia seems to be safe, let me derail this thread: I had one of the best weekends of my entire life in Cairns a few years ago. I had a fantastic meal at Lindsay's, got utterly destroyed (almost literally, after a particularly heated game ended strangely) at the pool hall around the corner, then walked it all off for 8 hours the next day. I also burned a good chunk of my beard off at our hostel bar one night, and my pals and I still sing a song we made up about the Skyrail ("It's a rail in the sky!"). What a place.
