22 April 2007

I had always wondered who watched nature documentaries. Like, who cares, right? And now I find a nature documentary party has formed around me. Weird.
Are you talking about the "Planet Earth" series running on discovery right now? Because it's an exceptional documentary.

OMG you're one of THEM!!!

Planet Earth is exceptional. Sigourney Weaver's voice is great too.

I'm watching it now, "4 weeks old and the cub is still blind, the cub is so helpless it needs complete devotion."

That's what I spent all day watching, Planet Earth.

I LOVE nature documentaries. My favorite ever is The Life of Birds, by David Attenborough.

Suck it, Pinky!

Also, for most of my life, I wondered who watched the E! network. Because, you know, like, who cares?! ;)

You're all scary!

Nature documentaries are awesome. You're a weirdo, TPS.

you and me baby ain't nothin' but mammals
let's do it like they do on the Discovery Channel...

sorry

Wait, actually, I DID watch a nature documentary today- I watched "The World's Ugliest Dog" competition on Animal Planet. Look at those pups!

I think Squiggy, the one with the mohawk, is my favorite.

One of the saddest days of my adolescent life was when the Discovery Channel switched from showing Wild Discovery in the afternoon/evenings to their crappy reality programming.

Ok, that's a pretty pathetic statement of my life, but still!

Planet Earth is particular enthralling when I watch it on the headrest monitors in my Hummer.
posted by mullacc 22 April | 19:16
No shame, backseatpilot.

Part of my issue with nature documentaries is that I'm very squeamish- I don't like seeing animals kill each other. Play nice, you guys! ::covers eyes::

Mup: I, too, love the Life of Birds. That's where I learned that kiwi eggs are disproportionally large. I was dumbfounded. Who knew such tasty fruit laid eggs?

TPS, I hit mute and take my glasses off when something's about to get eaten. It's a form of denial, yes, but I'm okay with it.
posted by mudpuppie 22 April | 19:26
Eh, I consider it an affirmation.

This is Peanut watching a documentary. I haven't managed to get a pic of her in front of the new HDTV. She loves the bird shows. And she likes Sunrise Earth on Discover HD Theater when there are places with lots of birds.

That looks very Kubrickian, dude.

Awww, I love nature documentaries! I just wish we got Animal Planet. One of these days I'll talk the mister into digital cable.

On preview: Kaylee loves stuff with dogs (of course) and other animals in it. The cats don't pay much attention to tv.

David Attenborough is pretty awesome, I'd say LOB is the pinnacle of his shows, but the others are kick ass as well.
posted by edgeways 22 April | 20:32
The Attenborough doc about plants is still one of my favorite TV things ever.

I enjoy nature documentaries too, and also will confess to a certain comfort-TV pleasure in fishing shows.
posted by Miko 22 April | 21:31
Nature Documentaries are the best, especially anything narrated by Sir David Attenborough.

i always like underwater things. There should be a 24/7 high quality underwater cam channel, and lava. And floating polar bears.
posted by ethylene 22 April | 21:51
Floating polar bears are awesome. They are the size of a small pick-up truck. If you go to see them do so in August when they are fat and happy and won't eat you. Bring lots of bug repellent.

Meerkat Manor.
How I love Meerkat Manor.

Oh god, I can't watch fishing shows. It's like golf or bowling - it's much more fun to do than watch.

My father LOVED nature documentaries. It was funny (and touching) to see a rather tough, overbearing eighty-something man chuckling at the romping of bear cubs. It made for some of the few peaceful times between us.

I was once also absolutely mesmerized and obsessed with this documentary about the sea sponge and sea urchins and the origins of life on earth (how single cells joined together for the first time in the sponge and progressed to the sea urchin, the first creatures with a nervous system and all). Fascinating stuff. In fact, I was so taken with it I declared to Jon, regarding using a natural sponge for bathing: I shall not wash my back with the mother of all creation! (He still finds that one amusing.)

Interestingly, sea urchins can be alternately very cooperative (they built the coral reefs!) and highly competite (one will sting another incessantly if it wants a rock to itself). Sounds like the basis of human nature to me.

One of the few times I thought I was in a Moebius time loop was when I was spending Thanksgiving with the first boyfriend. We were at his grandma's and just had a large lunch. "Walking with the Dinosaurs" was on and full of tryptophan, we fell asleep on her couch...

...only to wake up about an hour or two later, to the same footage on the TV!

Stupid dinosaur documentary marathon.

There's a recent documentary about cuttlefish that aired a couple weeks ago that's definitely worth checking out. Them's smart invertebrates!

I grew up watching David Suzuki's "The Nature of Things" and David Attenborough's "The Living Planet." I'm sad to say I don't watch as many nature documentaries as I used to, but I do try to catch them on PBS as much as possible. And I enjoy the National Geographic specials, too. So count me in the "loves nature documentaries" camp.

I meant sea anenome, by the by, not sea urchin (related, but not the same). Need to give the anenome its due credit.
