30 April 2007

I thought I was having a bad day. Seriously, today was one of those days that you just wish never happened. It wasn't horrific or anything. It was just one crappy thing after another until I got home and found the crap d'resistance in my mail box.

[More:]Then I had someone forward a link to a blog post by/about an acquaintance of mine. Rhon is an exceedingly kind and generous person with the temperament of a saint. Rhon is one half of the couple that runs a 50k+ community for Butch and Femme folks. I don't think that I'd be able to remain this calm, nor composed in the face of the same sort of BS.

If I read through the blogger's perspective, the collective appears to have explicit rules against nudes in the public gallery. If so, then this dismay is misguided.

Dude. Read that first paragraph again:

My portrait of a breast cancer survivor was banned and removed from the spring show at the artist collective where my wife and I rent a studio. I was told there was a vote amongst several artists and the painting was deemed “not family friendly”. Of the many other nudes in the show, only my work was censored.

Emphasis added.

In Canada we have had at least two TV commercials featuring upper body nude, breast cancer survivors. Women have breasts that get cancer. So do men. How is that not a family issue?

How strange. I'd really like to see the other works in the show to get some sense of what's going on here; it doesn't seem to make sense at all.
