The cukes and zukes will cross pollinate, as will the melons & the pumpkins. All squash type things are promiscuous and like to have wacky vegetable sex all over the garden, thus producing strange, strange mutant offspring. So you need to try to put all those away from each other as much as possible. I think tomatoes aren't supposed to like squash either but I could be wrong about that.

Also, groundhogs love broccoli. They'll do almost anything to get some broccoli.

tomatoes and walnut trees don't get along, I don't think. Otherwise, this collection seems okay- just that you'll have to be careful of your squash/gourds taking over and shading the less exuberant growers.

Traditionally, I think people have planted onions and marigolds around the perimeter because they deter some of the pests. Not sure how well that works.

actually, walnut trees kill anything in that family- tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, petunias, peppers (I think).

not that you're growing corn, but it's traditional to grow your beans up your corn. Something to do with the nitrogen replacing characteristics of beans counteracting the nitrogen depleting characteristics of corn, I think.

That's about the extent of my vegetable-diplomacy knowledge, none of which applies to you. But, living in the city as I do, I don't get to trot it out very often.

Your broccoli and lettuce and spinach are going to bolt soon, just so you know. You can prolong the lettuces' lives by pinching off the flower stalks. You should harvest the broccoli before it flowers, though.

Also, a tip for keeping your curcubits (fancy name for squshes and cukes! I is a smart gardener!) from cross-pollinating, if you've got a small space and have to plant them near one another: Plants in this family have male and female blossoms. The female blossoms are attached to a tiny little cuke/squash, while the male blossoms are just flowers. Watch for them both to open at the same time. Pick a male blossom, rub the pollen vigorously inside the female blossom's parts, and voila! You've just had squash sex!

But also, you've pollinated the fruit, and it won't turn into some freakish hybrid.

Also be forewarned about how much space pumpkin plants take up. Their vines can be over 25' long. I grew some two years ago and swore never to do it again because they took over my whole yard. Couldn't mow for months.

The pumpkins and melons will get their own mounds outside the fence so they can roam free. We don't have any walnut trees, so we're cool there. I just put in the peas, broccoli (started inside) and salad greens...but we're having a cold snap, so they probably won't make it. I can NEVER time them right. Guess I'll try again in the fall.
