23 April 2007

What I learned this weekend. [More:]

1. What the "feeders table" is. Had to sit near it while visiting Mom in The (nice) Home. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr.

2. Our gutters are nice and clean. Learned this while hanging out of an upstairs dormer window onto the roof face first while The Husband held my legs, looking for screws that had busted out of an awning. No luck. Further fun was had hanging backwards out of window, same arrangement, and re-attaching awning. Extreeeeem Home Repair! It was kinda fun, due to the danger, and the spectacle factor. (I live on a busy four lane road.)

What did you learn?
1. After visiting with my nephew and his 1-year-old, I think I want a baby girl.

2. Weed-whacking the lawn (because your lawnmower is in the shop) sucks.

I learned that, on a Saturday evening, if you have three rolls of film to scan AND a fridge full of Guinness, you should start scanning the film FIRST.

1. Maybe I really do look like Matthew McConnaughey. I got the fourth independent mention of it on Saturday, by our sassy waitress at Lone Star. It's bizarre.
2. Um. I guess that's all.

1. Mike, you've got to stop wearing the sarong and carrying the bongos in public.

2. 'Sassy' is one of my favorite kinds of waitress.

not to mention driving the Chevelle and wearing the Nugent t-shirt.

1. To hop on mikes theme, I was told twice this week that I resemble Edward Norton. I do not see it.
2. I also learned that I regret my idea of becoming a policeman never worked out.

1. I should really start planning and working on an herb garden (non-euphemism).

1. I can still manage a five-mile road race, somewhat miraculously after a slothful winter.

Go Miko! Previous to the roof adventure, I practiced my Race For The Cure - 3.1 miles three weeks from now. I only made my goal time because I was on a treadmill with no weather, foot traffic, or elevation. I know they only care about my $$$, heck, you can "sleep in for the cure" - but emotionally, I feel that if I don't go as fast as I can, I will hurt the cause.

1. Barbados is awesome. Who knew?
2. Losing your luggage for 5 days is not awesome.

I learned that April 23rd is "Tag des deutschen Bieres" in Germany, celebrating the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516. I am about to go out and celebrate myself.

2. Losing your luggage for 5 days is not awesome.

Ouch. Did the airline comp you some free tickets, at least?

Yesterday afternoon, I learned not to set too fast a pace when I start out speedmarching. It sorta snuck up on me, and though I kept trying to force myself to slow down, I started hyperventilating and am still feeling a little screwed up from it this morning. It's like the old Chaka Khan song "Once You Get Started (It's Hard to Stop)" -- it would've been more fun if I'd been in a position to stop and enjoy the buzz, but getting 70 lbs. several miles back to the car when my body was hitting the Panic button was decidedly not fun.

Programming chases into a lighting control system is harder than I thought. The difference between what I thought patterns would look like and how they really look means more experimentation is in order. It's tedious and the number of patterns that look good is far smaller than I thought.

1. You can buy what is essentially a two pound mortar round of organic ground beef for six dollars in Bethlehem, PA. It comes in this cool package like cookie dough.

2. Miami Vice was a very silly TV show. Especially silly.

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines is a pretty dorky movie.

Corn chowder is awesome with bacon, chopped chicken, and manestra added to it.

Heh... my partner, who is devoted to the first two Terminator movies the way some people are to Star Wars or The Godfather, finally saw T3 this weekend while visiting his sister. He didn't like it much, either.

I learned that getting sick after my birthday is an annual tradition.

Just now I learned what manestra was.

Go rainbaby. I am sure the harder you race the more cure there will be!

The first Terminator movie was nicely self-consistent. The second one had some puzzling things about it that the special effects only temporarily made me forget to wonder about. The third one was a frickin' mess, and I won't shell out money to see a fourth in the theater. But hey, Kristanna Loken, Clare Danes, and some weapon porn: I felt very 15 for a little while there. As I continue to turn into my own dad, I marvel at how I rarely enjoy TV and movies anymore.

hey, rainbaby, what's a "feeders table"? For the folks who have to be spoon-fed?

1. Corned beef hash (and eggs) at one in the morning will give you two days of heartburn and require emergency Pepto drugstore treks.

2. Deadwood is as addictive as The Wire.

3. Liquid Plumber Gel is the shitz.

1. My husband and I are an unbeatable team when it comes to the game Cranium.
No, seriously, I challenge any of you to beat us. We rock that hard. We could win the Cranium Olympics.
2. Black pepper angel hair pasta is not actually black. Bit disappointed by that one, really.

T4?! Holy crap, with the emphasis on "crap". I love T1 and, especially, T2. They're going to lose money on T4.

1. When attempting to attend a concert listed on the MySpace page of an old friend from hippie days, double check the date to make sure said old friend typed it in correctly (date listed = Saturday, actual concert = Sunday).

2. I can go to a bar (Friday night) or a party (Saturday night) and not drink alcohol and still be fairly ridiculous.

3. Scrump's wife is pretty damn cool (once I finally got a chance to, ahem, hear her over the din of her mate ).

4. Uncle Ben's rice is sort of strange when I make it in a rice steamer, but pretty good when I make it on the stove top.

5. Frozen broccoli that has been in my freezer for one year is not edible.

6. My allergies are a lot less sneezy after the rain.

7. My friend Leon (non-MeFi) is either brilliant or batshitinsane. Either way, I don't know what the fuck he's talking about.
posted by Claudia_SF 23 April | 10:51
8. I can drop my very old Sprint phone, have it break into 5 (count 'em) pieces, put it back together, and it still works.

They're going to lose money on T4.

If the initial US theater release were all they had to count on...probably. Kind of like Rambo III. But don't overlook the rental and foreign markets. For that matter, I don't know that T3 did all that well initially, but evidently it didn't do badly enough to preclude Yet Another Sequel.

My whole problem with the entire concept was using Aaahnult. I'd have cast Clara Peller or somebody else female, elderly and unprepossessing...and the kicker would've been that she'd've been a cyborg with a nuke inside her. "Sarah Connor?" "Yes?" *BOOM* Skynet has no imagination.

bwah! Nope. We did get a few hundred for clothes and stuff we had to buy. Luckily we weren't too hassled by it, because we were staying with 8 other people and had plenty of clothes to borrow.

1. That those silly little trainer socks are useless because they are too short and caused my trainers to rub on my ankles, thus forcing me to cut short my Saturday workout.

2. That I will not be intimidated by a bully.

3. That Elliott Yamin has made an awesome album.
posted by essexjan 23 April | 11:42
Yeah, essexjan? I need to support my hometown boy, but with the limited music budget. . .thanks for the recommend.

The feeders table is where you need help feeding yourself, and/or, you aren't eating enough and need to be encouraged to do so.

Mom's place is good in that the Dementia patients have their own floor, so everyone she hangs with has their wits. . .still, that's some grim stuff to confront every day. Thank goodness she has a sunny temperament. I'd be saving pills for a big goodbye.
