American Experience sucks me in again! This time with Summer of Love. I've always loved this series, but lately they're getting into late 20th century history that is just amazing.[More:]They just do a great job picking a strong theme and bringing it across with interview and archival footage or photgraphy. It's always affecting. Tonight the storyline was excellent, and I also enjoyed learning more about the Diggers, who took such a responsible, active role in trying to re-create community. I felt bad for them when they were stuck with 50,000 runaways, sufferers of mental illness, and stupid college kids on their hands, trying to educate them on how not to get raped or get VD. Trying to feed them. Lost souls everywhere.

The Diggers would be a great subject for their own documentary.
Here's a better home page for the Digger Archives.

I have no idea why American Experience isn't on my Tivo to-record list. I love this show. Our PBS station is showing a two-parter on Bobby Kennedy, starting tonight. Of course, I missed it.

Yeah, the Diggers always struck me as the grownups of the flower-power sixties Bay Area scene, the section of the scene who paid attention to the world around them, who actually thought about issues, argued about them, and managed to accumulate a little bit of street smarts along the way.

I do not envy people who have to be the grownups while surrounded by people who've retreated into childishness.

I read this first as 'American Express sucks me in again!,' and I thought, oh, Miko, that doesn't sound like you.

Agreed, j_p. Toward the end they looked really weary, like concerned older siblings.
