Decorating update [More:]I'm at that horrible point where I'm clearing out tons of junk and there is chaos and mess everywhere. I sorted out all my clothes today, bagged up two sacks for charity, but forgot about the shoes, which I'll do later.

Bloody typical, usually there's something through the door from a charity saying "we'll be collecting old clothes, bric-a-brac, etc. in this area on xxxxday" but not this week. I might have to take it to Oxfam myself, but parking there is a bastard.

I took my old 19" CRT monitor, an ancient (and huge) scanner and a broken old Windows Me computer down to the local council dump, along with an old clothes horse and a couple of boxes of suspension files. There's a section where you can put to one side the stuff that's still good, so the guys there helped me stack it all up for people to take it if they want it.

I cut my finger carrying something, it was probably a sharp edge on the inside of the computer (the outer casing is off it), but I didn't notice until I saw the blood dripping off my hand. Eeew.

Then I took an old video cabinet down to the garage. It's part of the furniture that my ex-husband is having (he chose it when we moved here, and I always thought it was old-fashioned). There's a couple of small side tables I can take down to the garage myself, but I'll need some help with the big stuff, so will have to see if I can find someone to help me with it.

I found the shed key!! A bit late now, though, I had to replace the lock on the shed 18 months ago when I lost the key. And I found the cats' favourite catnip mouse, so they love me again now.

The plan is that I'm painting this room all white - it gets all the afternoon sunshine, so it can stand being white. I was going to have a wood-effect floor laid, but on lifting up the horrible mustard nylon carpet, I saw that there's a thick underfelt which is, I think, stuck down. So I asked the flooring people if the wood floor can go over that, and they said no.

Plan B, I'll put carpet down in here instead, unless the underfelt scrapes off really easily. But I suspect it won't, so I think I'll leave well alone and carpet over it.

Paint is bought, some clearing still to do, but I was up at 6am (thank you cats) and am done with the heavy work for today. I have a load of old paperwork to sort out, so this evening I'll set the shredder up next to me on the sofa, and shred away while I'm watching TV.
I dunno if you'll want to do this but have you checked under the felt for wood flooring? Maybe you already have wood flooring and it just needs some refinishing?

It's concrete flooring. Crappy 60s construction, sadly.

Ah, that is sad. Oh well, at least carpet is nice and warm on cold feet!

There's the original parquet flooring in the living room which is in dire need of refinishing. I'll get that done professionally when the time comes (later this year).

I'm impressed, ej! Way to get your hustle on!

I need to have a week like this, cleaning out several parts of the house, and painting the hallway.

essex, glad you're having all this work done, but just in case, you might want to get a tetanus shot for that cut you got.

And Yay you for donating all that stuff to charity.:)

It's possible and even desireable to lay prefinished hardwood flooring over felt when installing over a concrete slab. Not laminate flooring, but real prefinished wood goes down pretty quickly, in these types of installations. Check this option before buying carpet, as the decorating possibilities are greater.

Thanks paulsc. I think for what is essentially a spare room, I'll go with the carpet, I think the wooden option would be too expensive. When it comes to my bedroom, which will be a boudoir extraordinare, I will spend more on it and probably go with a really good wooden floor and an expensive rug.
