Re-Release Me (And Let Me Live Again) Out-of-print albums you’d like to see reissued. [More:]

With the advent of the CD and the intarweb and various other infernal engines, there has been an upsurge of older, deleted material being remastered and reissued, often with various out-takes and live cuts appended. This is good.

Inevitably, however, there are a few gems that have either slipped under the radar entirely or were re-released only to be dropped again. Here are a few I thought of off the top of my head – please feel free to add your own.

Big DipperHeavens
Après REM, le deluge. Of the approximately forty billion jangly pop bands which sprang into existence in the mid-to-late 80s, these guys were among the best. I’ve heard rumors of Heavens being reissued soon, but then again if you listen long enough you’ll hear anything. In the meantime, here’s a taste: “Lunar Module”.

The Original Sins – Big Soul
In perusing Brother JT’s site while preparing this post, I was surprised to see that the Sins are still playing out. I thought they’d split up long, long ago. It just goes to show: ya gotta pay attention, always. Anyway, this is an album full of big, dark, loud garage/psyche goodies, with a little tinge of Dylan just for kicks. If “It’s All In My Head” whets your appetite, there’s an anthology (another surprise) available now through the website that looks pretty good.

Bram TchaikovskyStrange Man, Changed Man
One of the better power pop releases of the late 70s, featuring a full-on twelve-string attack. You may know the band for the single released from this album, “Girl of My Dreams”. While that’s a fine song (as is the title track), I chose another to share here. I’m perverse that way. Here’s “I’m the One That’s Leaving”.

Zeitgeist – Translate Slowly
Sweet, downbeat jangle-pop from Austin, TX. They did a fantastic cover of Willie Nelson’s “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain”, and their originals were pretty fantastic as well – “Araby”, “Things Don’t Change”, “Freight Train Rain” all stick out in my memory. A fave from the early 80s. I wish I had a track to post here, but apparently I missed the window during which the album was available on CD. Sorry.
The Detroit Memphis Experiment - Mitch Ryder featuring Booker T. & the MG's. I've heard a few tracks from it, it's really good.

Game Theory - The Big Shot Chronicles and Real Nighttime. I have both of these on vinyl but my record player is in storage. Lolita Nation by the same band is also out of print, but I do have the CD for that one.

Ella in Berlin. She does this version of "Ain't got anything but love" where she turns into Louis Armstrong for a bit and it's great. I used to have this album but it's gone missing (I suspect my brother) and I've been looking for another copy for ages.

"Release me" soundtrack for this thread.

Is that the album where she forgot the lyric to... well, I don't remember myself what song it was - anyway, she basically scatted her way out of the song, figuring that most of her German audience wouldn't know the lyric either. Is it that album?

And that Laura tune is nice. I had Elvis in mind when I titled the thread, but that's a good substitute.

The Other Ones - The Other Ones. The 80's pop group not that Grateful Dead thing.

Tater Totz - Alien Sleestaks From Brazil

Coven - all three of their albums (ignoring that horrible transfer by Akarma of Witchcraft...) but especially Blood On The Snow, the one with the bizarre cover of "One Tin Soldier."

The Brains - The Brains. I've managed to collect half the tracks of this album from people who've copied from the LP as well as a couple of V/A comps. But a remaster would be ideal.

The Coup - Genocide & Juice and Kill My Landlord. Boots Reilly sells his own bootlegs of these at shows, but it'd be nice to have a full reissue.

I second the Big Dipper and Bram Tchaikovsky nominations, and would add Dumptruck, and Buffalo Tom's and the Buck Pets' first albums.

Game Theory's library should be reissued again. I have two of their albums on CD -- 'Distortions of Glory' is not very good (and Scott Miller acknowledges it on the liner notes) while 'Two Steps from the Middle Ages' is okay but I've got it memorized. I have 'Lolita Nation' on vinyl but would like it and the rest on CD.

Death Cube K is another one. It's Buckethead (evading a contractual obligation) on Bill Laswell's short-lived black-box Axium label. I found the jewelbox at a local store but the clerk couldn't find the disk. Actually, I'd like to have the whole Axium series -- the few I've got make me want more.

Death of Samantha's 'Where the Men Wear the Glory and the Women Wear the Pants', if for no other reason than their simultaneously mocking/respectful version of 'Sylvia Plath'.

Various other things that were obscure even when they were new: Tripod Jimmie, 15-60-75, Translator's 12" single with 'Ronnie Raygun Blues'... man, I feel old now. Time to lie down.

Oh yeah... Pylon. Love Tractor. So many more things from the Enigma, Big Time, Herb Jackson labels... Some of this stuff's back in print but I haven't done a good job of looking yet.

Good news, argedee! Dumptruck has been reissued!

Ella in Berlin, on CD. (And yes, bmarkey, this is the one where she forgets the lyrics to "Mack the Knife." Her extemporizing is hilarious and wonderful.)

"Mack the Knife", of course! I last heard it a thousand years ago.

Okay, the Death Cube K thing wasn't on Axium. It was on Strata.

ardgedee, I can definitely sympathize. I'm a pretty big Laswell fan, and the list of related projects that I'd like to see reissued (Fela remixes! Herbie Hancock and Foday Musa Suso! Niels and NY street drummers!) is very, very long.

But the Traveling Wilburys albums are set to be reissued, which makes me happy.

Then again, Pharoahe Monch's Internal Affairs, and either Bahamadia album, and lots of other '90s underground hip-hop touchstones, probably aren't coming back any time soon.

And Rhino intentionally did a very limited release of that complete-Aretha-Franklin-and-King-Curtis-at-the-Fillmore-West album, and I missed the chance to get it, which is a pity.
