27 April 2007

What did you have for dinner? [More:]I had a sage-y turkey burger w/cheese, some potato chips, and a couple chocolate cake donuts for dessert. The turkey burger wasn't an attempt to be healthy - I don't eat beef.

As a special bonus - the donuts were paid for by my mom. (I take her grocery shopping because she can't lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk.) For some reason even though I'm 34 years old and employed - mom still lets me get away with just tossing stuff in the cart. (She also bought me hair color. The total for these items was only $7 though - I only buy cheap hair color because my hair is so short and the donuts were also marked down because they were from this morning.)

And hey, I just made a connection within my noodle as to why mom lets me throw stuff in the cart. It's because I'm always hauling her to doctors, Sam's Club, the grocery store, and doing her house and yardwork. hahaha. It's all good. I like her.
I didn't have dinner. In the mid-afternoon I had two frozen white castle cheeseburgers and a box of cream cheese jalapeno poppers. Since then I've nibbled on some meat snacks, cookies and a brownie and drank several beers and some Irish whiskey.

I splurged and got a pizza. Which I am now regretting, since it was way too greasy. Urgh.

I kept snatching broccoli rabe with garlic and oil from the pan while I was cooking it, and then when dinner came I was too full too eat anything. That was about 4 hours ago and I'm still stuffed. It was really yummy though.

Guinness for dinner here. I think I'm going to bed shortly.

I just made some more cream cheese dip and am eating it with crackers. No roaches this time.

Chicken breast chunks roasted with a bit of garlic infused olive oil and balsamic over a mescaline mix with a shallot and red peppercorn vinaigrette.

I think you might have meant Mesclun, arse_hat. If not, I hope you're not planning on driving anywhere in the next few hours.

bmarkey: there a number of restaurants I've been to that make that mistake on menus: 'mescaline salad.' I always picture the diners happily staring at the ways and coversing with the plumbing.

mescaline mix is common in cook books too.

My salad... it's breathing.

Roasted vegetables (sweet potatoes, Yukon gold potatoes, onions, carrots) and a 3-cheese pasta gratin with sauteed mushrooms and kale. I also made an almond-blueberry cake with lemon, and ate a piece while it was still warm. It was glorious.

Oh, man. I once tried to eat a salad while tripping. It was... unsuccessful. Everything was so springy, so bouncy and oddly like a mouth full of flexible exoskeletons.

Oh and for dessert, bittersweet chocolate sauce, toasted coconut, and bananas with vanilla ice-cream.

Leftover samosas, and I made a few new ones with leftover ingredients. A zucchini tomato spinach stew with cumin, coriander, and fennel seeds, and some crossover chutney and yogurt.

Ended up giving 4 samosas to the neighbors. It was all yummy.

Oh and some Washington Chardonnay (Waterbrook) which, curiously, goes well with Indian.

In the midst of cooking salmon roasted on a bed of wild fennel (I'm a bit worried about this; it doesn't seem to be cooking as fast as I had anticipated), baby chard sauteed with garlic, and mashed baby yukon gold potatoes with plenty of butter and cream. Ikkyu is in the process of putting together a salad, which should include radishes he just harvested from the garden. Expensive-ish chardonnay, which was a housewarming gift from my father (part of an entire case!) to accompany.

Porterhouse steaks on the grill, baked potatoes with sour cream, summer squash, biscuits, wilted lettuce salad, apple pie. Sam Adams Boston Lager & coffee, later, with the pie.

We're happystuffed.

A cheese quesadilla from Baja Fresh, with grilled veggies inside. It was supposed to have chicken in there too, but I brought it home before checking and I wasn't about to go back out.

Dessert is, in theory, going to be some ooey gooey passover brownies from Manischewitz but I'm slightly dubious at whether the end product will be edible. But they were on sale! For $1.25! How can you resist trying $1.25 passover brownies?!

Update: Resist trying $1.25 passover brownies. Bleh.

Ha!

I would also say, resist trying to roast salmon over wild fennel. It sounds all fancy, but it doesn't really seem worth the hassle.

Fresh artisan bread (toasted), a nice chunk of St. Andre triple cream brie, and some delicious red grapes. (When I get lazy and don't feel like cooking, it helps to pretend to be French.)

I had a vegetable stew sort of thing with fresh fava beans, potatoes, tomatoes, zucchini, onion, garlic, and olive oil, which I ate with bread and feta. I have enough to feed the rest of you, too, plus some left over to host dinner for a smallish country.

Three different colors small tomatoes (ok, se orange and red and red again, but they were different kinds) cut in half and quickly fried with big scampi shrimp, salt, pepper and half a teaspoon of sherry vinegar.

Grilled Alaskan halibut, tabouleh, artichokes from the yard. Yum!

dabitch, where do you live that your tomatoes are already good? (I'm envious!)

Toasted corned beef sandwiches. Not real corned beef, canned corned beef. It's still good in an odd way.
