After scanning a whole bunch of new sketches for a new polyorama, i realize i REALLY need a tablet.[More:]
My god, life would be soooo much easier, or at least quicker. But i bet it wouldn't work with the old comp anyway.
Oh blast and bother of it all.
How cheap can i get away with to be functional and work with the old and new comp (macs)?
Does the awesome swapsies work for this kind of thing?
Oh yeah, btw i am totally skint.
Also, is there an alternative to flickr for free image sets and storage?

And was mecha unreachable for an hour or was it just me?

MeCha was down for me, too, eth...

Photobucket.com seems to be the free-image-storing-site of choice around here. I found out about it via essexjan and others hosting images there.

ermmm. No. It was just you. You and your ISP's. That's it. metachat didn't go down for an hour. You imagined it. And it was someone elses fault. That's it. Crazy People. Ha ha ha. There was no downtime. Believe me. Believe me

The Wacoms are mac compatible, I believe. I was gifted a 4 x 5 graphire last year, and it cost around 140 CDN (100-120 USD). Good entry-level tablet - I love it, so far. It takes a while of getting used to, especially drawing smooth, nonjagged lines, but with practice, it can become your best friend. :D

Don't go for a cheap cop-out. Really. Prior to the Graphire, I had a 30$ Tablet that I picked up from an electronics store on sale. After I got home, I realized it was from a company who'd gone obsolete, whose webdomain was up for sale. It took me forever to find a driver for the stupid thing, and definitely was *not* worth the trouble. Better to save up a bit and get a graphire than to be stuck with a JAM tablet for two years =\.

Some people have other image/photo things but i can't think of what any of them are called. Also, i wonder if they are worth the cost, if there is any.
i need to finally give up on the hopes of someone sponsoring me, eh?

The thing with a tablet (had my eye on wacom for a while) is that any available now will run on tiger of the new comp and nothing will work on 10.1.4 whatever of this old one that has the old PS on it.
it is all le drag

Do any tablet users use them as mice and do you like it?

Yeah, the tablet comes with a mouse. The sensitivity's actually better than my Microsoft issue mouse. But then again, Microsoft, and all that. You can use the stylus for a mouse, but I never got into that.

You're probably thinking of tablet PC? It basically lets you draw directly on the screen... But those are hellishly expensive. =\ Although those seem rather dreamy. *dreams* *of lottery tickets*

Seconding the cheapo Wacom. I've been loving mine.

I don't know anything about non-Flickr image hosters, but for Polyorama purposes you're more than welcome to storage on my hosting space.

I love my Wacom Graphire 4x5. It sells for about $100 anywhere I've seen it.

I don't always use it as a mouse because I have a laptop that moves around the house a lot. But when it is connected, I don't use my touchpad. My Wacom actually came with a mouse you can use on the tablet, like using a mouse on a mousepad. It uses the same kind of sensor as the pen, so it doesn't take batteries. The tablet has a scroll wheel and two programmable buttons, and there are two on the pen as well.

One thing I found surprising when I started using it was how the pen tracks the location of the pointer. When you're using a normal mouse and run out of space, you have to pick up the mouse and move it so you have the range you need to finish your action. With the Wacom, the top right corner of the tablet is the top right corner of the screen - the whole tablet is really the whole screen. Maybe other tablets are like this - I'm not sure.

I don't know why a Wacom wouldn't work with your older computer, but I'm no expert.

As far as image hosting, I use Photobucket and ImageShack in addition to Flickr. They're both free.

Thanks, cortex. i'm trying to figure out which is faster right now, finishing more on paper or in Photoshop and what size/detail to make them. i'm just rushing mock ups since the crash loss, but doodling is fun.
Getting the tablet is tempting but of course it will not work with the old computer. Still...

i know about photobucket and imageshack but i think there are other services that let you make sets and pages.
it's just an easy first step instead of waiting until you have a page all ready, exactly the way you want it, these instaservices.

Do you have any CompUSA stores near you? They are shutting down a bunch of them in a few weeks and are currently having clearance sales. I am going to get a Wacom tablet at the one closing down here when they really get desperate and start to really slash the prices.

So, in a vaguely-related item, I've noticed that there are metric shit-tons of scanners at my local thrift and secondhand stores lately. Is this some kind of weird local thing, or an even weirder national phenomenon?

Maybe it's a mass upgrade somewhere.

i don't know of any CompUSA stores near me but if someone can find me a discounted tablet, let me know.
