Question: When to hold your ground. I gots a quesiton for y'all So the company I work for wants me to move to the East Coast to work out of their HQ. I was talking about the move and I mentioned them paying for the move and got a cool response. My current home is in Europe.[More:]

So, do I hold tight to this point? I like the company and I think it have great growth in the future and I *could* afford to move on my own. But they want me to move so I think they should pay for it. Or is this an unreasonable request?

I could stay in Europe and work for a NGO or some other company but I like working for a small company.

Please hope me!
Yes, if they've asked you to move, they should pay for full relocation costs.

(and unless you would happily move to the US on your own, given the chance, don't back down on that full part)

Of course they should pay for it! Good grief!

Yes, they have to pay for it if they want you to move.

They should definitely pay for it. I was moved from the West Coast of the US to the East Coast by a big company and it was the easiest move ever--I didn't even have to pack my stuff in boxes since they hired full-service movers. Even my "house-hunting" trip to NYC and apartment-broker fees were paid for. The only catch was that I had to pay-back the expenses if I didn't stay with the firm for one full year (I left exactly one-year later, as it happens).

Bigger companies usually have rules on how much they ship. But yeah, they should spring for a container of stuffs and a flight-ticker, jeeez. (if you have more than a container or 1/2 container whatever their rules are, the rest is shipped by you. Which is fine methinks. But you shouldn't do the entire move out of your own pocket!)

oh and where in EUrope are you? shouldn't be too hard to find the proce of a container, and a flightticket which you can then send them and say "y'all cool with this?", might get them more inclined to fork out the money. Usually people overestimate the costs quite a bit.

They either don't know how this kind of thing works, or are hoping you don't know.

If I understand you, your company not only wants you to move to a new country, they want you to move to another continent?! The real question is for how long?

If this is permanent (longer than a year), they should not only pay for ALL costs associated with your move, they should be giving you a promotion, a bonus, and a very fat contract. Also, if your employer is that small, your counteroffer probably should include a percentage of the company itself.

Regardless of the time involved, this is definitely cause to renegotiate your entire salary/benefits package.

Yeah, this is an impossible question. Are you being asked to relocate from Paris to Schenectady, or are we talking a move from Outer Høvså to midtown Manhattan?

Yes they should pay for the move, period.
