19 April 2007

Smackdown! For those who are interested, Alberto Gonzales' testimony in front of the Senate is streaming live on KQED right now. Holy hell, they sure are giving it to him. (And he apparently has a really shitty memory.)
He's spent is entire work life being a factotum for the Bush family, apparently, and little else. It's embarrassing to watch him speak, under questioning.

I'm imagining Lynndie England playing Patrick Leahy in the movie version.

Heh.

"he apparently has a really shitty memory"

A desirable trait in a USAG, I am sure.

Holy crap, he's getting his ass handed to him. I can't listen anymore. He's just SO not up to this.

This is a bit hard to follow without a program. I'm more interested in how the Republicans interview Gonzales than the Democrats. If the Republicans give him a reaming, I believe that would foreshadow how Republican candidates will conduct their upcoming presidential campaigns.

sure they're "giving" it to him, but will there be, oh I don't know, accountability and consequences?

Nina Totenberg (on whom I have a serious crush) just said sources have told her that Gonzales' wife doesn't want him to quit, which is one of the reasons why he hasn't. Heh.

nimmpau, that is the difference between Democrat questioning and Republican questioning. If only Democrats berate Gonzales then nothing will come of it. However, if some influential Republicans get more involved than the heretofore posturing, then something may very well occur, possibly even before 2009.

Specter and Sessions were tough on him. Hell, even Cornyn did some posturing in a really candy-ass way.

I don't suppose anyone has posted any kind of transcript yet.

WTF? Kyl (from AZ) is now going on about funding for crime victims and proposed legislation on internet gambling. Way to use your 10 minutes, asshole.
posted by mudpuppie 19 April | 15:37
Now Specter is talking about the Clery law, and how to prevent another Virginia Tech incident.

This isn't fun anymore.

Not a transcript per se, but Slate has posted an edited series of questions and answers.

You know, I've always thought that when public officials start claiming huge gaps in their memory they should be removed on the simple basis that they are unfit to perform their jobs if they have serious memory problems.
Q. are you able to remember XYZ?
A. No
Q. You're fired, thank your for your time, good bye.

edgeways: Firing a federal employee or official for unjust cause is far easier than for just cause.

Nuh-uh, it's easy:

Boss: "You're fired!"

Employee: "B-b-but... why?"

Boss: "Just 'cause."
