Hagrid at the World Dock Pudding championship. So, for the last couple of years, I've gone to the World Dock Pudding championship in local Mytholmroyd. [More:] It's a nice affair, pleasantly parochial and completely in tune with the slightly surreal air engendered by the Calder valley.

This year, as part of some "Aging comedian drives around in a strange vehicle tasting the local fares of strange corners of the country" programme, Robbie Coltrane "stopped by". A friend of mine showed him how to cook the stuff and he entered the competition. Here he is making a completely natural entrance.

Not that I'm spoiling too much, but he came second in the competition. And rumour has it that he cheated by adding Stilton cheese to the recipe.
Mmmmm Stilton. I've never had Dock Pudding. I'll have to give it a try. Being stateside, can I substitute spinach?

That's Ted Hughes' hometown.

I think Hagrid would pick the animals over the kids if he were forced to make a choice.

Spinich has the wrong taste, but it's worth a try.
And yes, it's Ted Hughes' home town.

Seriously, what is "dock"?

I've no clue.

I believe it's also called Bistort.
Although I'm loathe to say it actually is in case I'm wrong and someone tries to make it and I end up killing someone.
