Tattoo and Piercing roundup! So I'm curious, my fellow inked and pierced bunnies, what do you have? What do you plan to do next?
Here's mine!

a closeup, which was just me cropping the grey roots out:

And these, on my lower back, which could use a touchup:

Next work I'm planning is an old-style Sabres logo on my foot, and large Sailor Jerry-inspired shamrocks with banners below them on the back of each calf. Left will read "Lady" and right "Luck." Still working up the sketch for that a bit more before I hit up my artist for an estimate. In either case I can't until August since I promised my sister no more tattoos that would show in the dress until after her wedding.

I have a small tattoo of the AA symbol (triangle inside a circle) on the base of my spine. That's all. I'm not planning any more.
posted by essexjan 29 April | 11:52
Can we make this a piercing roundup too? I've been curious about that for a while.
posted by box 29 April | 12:16
Oh, and my most recent tattoo is a design from the control panel of the Qix arcade game. There's a picture (of the control panel, not the tattoo) on my Flickr page if you're especially curious. Next will probably be something either food- or jazz-related.
posted by box 29 April | 12:20
I don't see why it can't also be a piercing roundup. Any mods around who want to change the subject line?

I just didn't think of it because I've been piercingless for almost a year now. Lousy migration.

Piercings: ears only, one hole in each lobe.
posted by essexjan 29 April | 12:35
Yeah, I have the same for piercings. I used to have both nipples and second holes in each ear, but the body piercings migrated and the ear holes closed from disuse.
My original ear piercings were done when I was a toddler, though, so I can go literally years without earrings and they won't close up.
posted by kellydamnit 29 April | 12:42
14 piercings: 13 in my ears including an industrial and one in a "special" place.

2 tattoos: a raven on my back just below my neck centered over my spine and a bracelet around my right wrist of waves and fish.

Plans for one more by this guy, trees on my lower back but not sure just what yet. Also I'd like him to alter both of my existing tatts to tie everything together. Then I'll have earth, sea and sky and this will help to balance me.

Piercings: ears only, one in each lobe. Did them myself when I was 16 after a year of talking my mother down from 18.

Ink: a purple poison dart frog on my back, got back in 2002.

Those who are not afraid of stitches can see what it looks like now, after pregnancy and a wee bit of surgery on Tuesday morning. Stitches ITCH!

I think I'm going to get second holes in each ear after this term is over. I'm so vanilla.

kellydamnit, your dragon is pretty.
posted by casarkos 29 April | 14:24
Ok, I'm a tool. It's 12 in my ears, I forgot that I have a nostril piercing. I don't know why I forgot that.
posted by LunaticFringe 29 April | 14:32
piercings: both ears only.
tats: none yet. have design picked, haven't quite made up my mind to do it.
posted by jonmc 29 April | 14:48
I have a number of tattoos, but I don't show anyone any apart from the one on my ankle.

Piercings are 3 in one ear, two in the other. I used to have my belly button done as well, but it kept irritating me so I took it out.
posted by gaspode 29 April | 14:51
Three rings in my left ear, done on my 30th birthday.
posted by BoringPostcards 29 April | 14:55
I've actually considered nipple rings, but I dunno if I have the nerve.

Also, I have a frog on my right ankle but I don't have a picture of it. And the flower wraps around to a bulb. . . piercings: 2 in left ear, one in right.

Goodness gracious. I sometimes have no idea how much goes on in the world.

Tattoos: none
Piercings: none

I feel positively Victorian, except that I think they pierced as well. I got a scar on my cheek that I gave to myself shortly after birth, will that count?
posted by JanetLand 29 April | 15:14
I feel that way a lot myself, JanetLand. Not in this case, though.

Current piercings: 5/8" or so earlobes, nasal septum, three "special" ones (I like that, LF). The non-earlobe piercings are all between 8g and 4g, though most will probably someday be larger.

Tattoos (besides the one I already mentioned): four runes, three fish, two dragons, some Celtic art, a book design element, a Technics tonearm, Sputnik-1.

Just ears. Had my belly button pierced for about 6 months, but I took it out one day and forgot to replace it for 24 hours, and it closed up. I realized that I wasn't going to miss it, so now I just have a little scar where the piercing used to be. My sister is trying to talk me into getting matching tattoos with her; I might be convinced to get something very, very small.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 29 April | 15:53
I had my left ear pieced twice. It was the eighties. They've both closed up.
posted by plinth 29 April | 16:34
I had my ears pierced about c. 20 years ago.

I let them close up and have never been inked.
posted by jason's_planet 29 April | 17:10
Piercings: three in my left ear, right ear has one, one in my nose (left side).

Tattoos: one on the inside of my left ankle (bee and flower) and one on the outside of my right ankle (eye of Horus).

Future piercings: I'm still thinking about a cartilage piercing in one of my ears. Not sure if I want it at the top or in the tragus.

Future tattoos: I want both of my ankle tattoos to be extended all the way around my ankles. Kind of a forest theme with the bee, more flowers, vines, etc. I'd like the Egyptian one to look like a piece of jewelry similar to the collars the Ancients wore. To keep them even I want them both to be about 2.5 to three inches high.

Sorry for the leg shot, but it's the only picture I have handy of my Snoopy as an artist. I got this in 1994, after my grandmother, who painted, passed away. I have another Snoopy on the other side of the same ankle in his dancing pose. I'd like to have "Live, Love, Laugh" tattooed above it in an arc.

These representations of birds are in honor of my two sons, my first new tattoo in eleven years. I had grand plans of a gorgeous Mucha design for my left shoulder blade, but this tat reminded me of just how painful they can be.
In addition to these, I have a very old, self designed Pegasus on my right shoulder blade, and a howling wolf and tiger head on my left chest - both of which really need a touch up.

Tattoos: one around my ankle -- badly needs retouching. Complicated to explain -- suffice to say that I got it at a time in my life when I thought tattoos had be deeply symbolic. Next tattoo (it would be the first in 15 or so years) -- the first and last sentences from Wittgenstein's Tractatus. Probably one on each arm, around the biceps. It would be great if I could find a facsimile of the original publication . . . otherwise, I'll settle with the words in German, in a German-ish looking font.

Piercings: this may be too much information -- if so, I apologize. Both nipples, a PA, and a frenum. Used to have an eyebrow ring and am considering getting it redone. I have fantasies of having a frenum ladder, but it really was a distinctly unpleasant piercing to heal, so I dunno. Will probably also get a guiche in the not-so-distant future. I'm also really attracted to apadravya piercings, but don't think I have the nerve.

Again, I feel old. I think that I knew three guys with pierced ears (one each, left ear only) in college and zero with tattoos. In the early eighties, the only people I ever saw with tattoos were Hells Angels and veterans. Now that I'm in my early forties, I think that it's too late for me to get either without looking pathetic. Plus needles make me faint.

My first. Only took 3.5 freaking hours. Owwwwww.

My second. Took considerably less time. That's my left calf, btw.

Props: both were done by my good friend Brandi DiPietro. For years now, I've wanted to get the phrase, "In girum imuns nocte et consumimur igni," around my upper arm, but I haven't been able to come up with a typeface I like. I keep intending to ask a designer friend to hand-write it for me, but he's a busy guy.

Ugh. There is an extra "n" in that Latin phrase I just posted. Its presence stops it from being the palindrome that it is.
posted by 2or3whiskeysodas 29 April | 21:52
I've got none— a fear of needles and a track record of impermanence has left me without any distinguishing marks. My girlfriend, however, has a buncha ear piercings and a tattoo of a ladybug on her ankle. The coolest one I've seen was a doctoral student pal, who had a couple Dickinson poems tattooed in longhand that travel up his arms, around his torso, and down his legs, including (if I recall correctly) the "This is my letter to the world."

Reports are that it gets him mad pussy.

Tattoo of Ignatz bouncing a brick off of Krazy Kat's melon, on upper right arm. I've had it for about 14 years, so it could probably use a touch up. For those of you not familar with Krazy & Ignatz, here is a representative image - not the one I have, but not dissimilar:

I got my left ear pierced something like 27 years ago. I let the hole close sometime in the early 90s, when I started seeing characters on sitcoms with earrings.

Every now and again I think about getting another tat, but not enough to actually go out and do it. So far.

I must say there is some lovely ink here. I wish I had pictures to show.

Piercings: One in my right earlobe and three in my left. Yeah, it was the eighties. I can still get earrings in them, but usually just wear them often enough that they don't close up.

Tattoos: Small dragon done in '89 just under my left collarbone. Large-ish dragon in '94 on my back on the right upper area. Also in '94, a small-ish white lily with the kanji for "friend" (and yes, I checked) under it kind of wrapped around the inside of my right breast/sternum area. And, in '01, a flower of my own design on my right upper arm. It is a variant of the spiral design I've been using since '00 to sign my artwork.

It sounds like a lot, but a plain t-shirt covers it all. They are private reminders of times/stages/people. I'd love to have more ink, and will, if I can afford it and find an artist to work with. Not so much on the piercings.

This thread is useless without LT.

This is my wife's, but I've got the same one: A "D & D" between waxing and waning moons. I also have a nekkid little Woden modelled after a 7th Century belt buckle on my shoulder.

I've long had the idea of adding some little stars for my oldest son and some trees for my youngest and couple more personal little ones and then joining all the points in a pentacle on my back. It'll probably never happen, though, from sheer laziness.

My wife pierced my ears on various occasions, but all three holes are long gone.

True that. I can think of a few other modified Mechazens who haven't posted here, too.

Tattoos: (no images on hand, sorry) a circular celtic knot on my chest, about 3" down from the centre of my collarbone, based on a brooch my uncle gave me. It's quite old and I was thinking of touching it up, but the friend who's now my tattoo artist says it's just that the lines are fine and have feathered a bit, so touching it up wouldn't help unless she filled in the gaps with white. We're talking about incorporating it into a stag beetle design. A bearded dragon (lizard that is, not a dragon with a beard) on my left upper arm which is a coverup of (and vast improvement on) a tribal-type design I got there in the mid-90s that brought back crappy memories. Next ink: the stag beetle mentioned above, but first I want to get a phoenix on my right hip/thigh, I just haven't come up with the right design or the money yet.

Piercings: At the moment, 4 in my left ear and 2 in my right. I had another in the left ear but it's closed up. I also had 2 in my right eyebrow and one in my nose, but I had to pull them out during the day when I started a gov't job about 10 years ago, then the rings broke from metal stress and I couldn't be bothered getting new ones just so that I could sit around home at night and look punk. I still have the gold barbell that used to live in one of the eyebrow piercings, though I don't see wearing it again.

Also, yes! LT! Now *that's* a tattoo.

Oh, and when I got my first tattoo, my (tattooed) friend gave me some excellent advice: "Tattoos are like children: no-one finds yours as interesting as you do." Actually, I do find the bunny ink fascinating (I concur with lilywing--there are some great tattoos in this thread), but it saved me from showing my new tattoo to anyone within a 5 mile radius who stayed still for more than 2 seconds.

I have a cartilage piercing in the fold at the top of my right ear (I regret the positioning, btw, and wish I had gone to a more reputable shop instead of Claires in the mall - the earring has caused the top of my ear to be a little misshapen), and both my lobes were pierced as a kid.

No tattoos.

I had my right eyebrow pierced, but I woke up one night with my eye all puffed and swollen about two months after I'd had it done and got scared, so I took it out. I really liked it, though, and was very bummed to lose it. A cute little curved surgical steel barbell. Had it done at a great place, too... New York Adorned in the East Village; very clean and reliable. I've talked to several other people who've had the same problem with brow piercings. I did slack off on the cleaning towards the end; I thought two months was enough, but I know brows take a long time to heal. Or I may just be sensitive; my pierced ears, which I've had since I was eleven, hurt when I wear earrings much, too. I'm considering trying the brow again. One more go-around (it hurt like a mother f*cker, though... but it was that "good" kind of hurt. I can see how people could get kind of addicted to piercing.)

No tattoos, as yet. Got one in the works, though. Hmmm... that would be a way to spend a little of that tax return money....

Tattoos:

On my left shoulderblade, a detail from this Dali painting. It's just the pomegranite, the fish, and the first tiger. No naked ladies involved.

Also, on my chest, one which isn't worth discussing.

Piercings:

None, although I am considering having a large iron bar stuck through my femur.

Actually, I'm not.

I just like saying "femur."

I have that (well, titanium).
Wouldn't recommend it.

No piercings. No tattoos.
I could think up a few tattoos I might get, but I can't think of a single place to put them on me where they wouldn't look positively ridiculous.

I flirted with the thought of getting a piercing on the helix of my ear for a couple of years, but decided I didn't want it enough to actually get it.
posted by CitrusFreak12 30 April | 14:29
Two piercings, left ear, high up, done in 1985 (that was way punk then, especially in Charlotte, NC). And a self-administered scar on my left forearm from Kilauea-fuckin'-lava. That's right, lava.
posted by mrmoonpie 30 April | 20:49
I've got four holes in each ear.

I also had my nose pierced (left) but gave it up after about a year because I just have too much sinus activity (that was 13 years ago).

I've got a tattoo of a vine of roses on my left ankle that I got 14 years ago (needs to be retouched and I have no pictures.) I think I'm going to get a tattoo on my left outer calf sometime in the next year - probably a mermaid...or maybe a fairy.
