Considering he didn't quite know how much of a safety margin he had, and it wasn't just some Jackass-type stunt but research with actual therapeutic application:

He reminds me of Richard Levitan, from whom I just took a seminar in which he self-nasal-laryngoscoped himself with a fiber-optic scope and talked to us so that we could see his vocal cords moving.

And apparently Levitan himself thinks that the deeply unnerving James Brimacombe, FRCA, who has apparently used the LMA (laryngeal mask airway) in just about every possible context, including underwater on both himself and his dog (with no ill effects), is truly hardcore.

As far as I'm concerned, people like this aren't packing size-12 solid brass ones as much as they have cornered the entire brass market.
