Hey I'm three today in Mefi years that is. Kind of funny, I hadn't looked at that site in quite awhile and just randomly ended up thee today and... oh my, you lose track of those years when they start adding up.

With a "Contribution Index" score of 2.34 I better get blabbing to catch up.
I'm four and a half.

You're my bitch.

hm. i'm a n00b. 433 days and my user number's in the 32K range. meh.

they don't include askmefi in the equation, and since that's where i initially came thru from, it's what most accurately represents me as a user. i mean i didn't actually even bother reading the blue until a couple months ago (sorry to admit that). it's kind of humorous actually - back when i originally logged in, i somehow managed to bork my bookmarks so i'd click thru metafilter to ask and my reaction was 'oh damn, there's that annoying blue header page... make it go away'.

Actually, lfr, the contribution index linked by edgeways does include AskMe activity.

We're also in the small group of a hundred or so users who are the last of the pre-five-dollar noobs. I forgot this was my mefiversary until I saw your post here.

Seven years.

Having said that I've contributed fuck all.

Ah, but I see you've still got the condescending snarkasm going on. You can take the boy out of Mefi, but you can't take the Mefi out of the boy!

MetaFilter is not some sort of disease. There are plenty of people who find it useful, fun, and informative. But hey, you get out of it what you put into it.

Seriously, though, you sound like a teenager dissing on something he used to love because it's "kid's stuff". "Yeah, I used to do metafilter, but that shit's played out."

Sorry, I don't mean or intend to pick a fight here. I just don't like it when folks act all dismissive of something that used to be a significant part of their life. Obviously you got something out of it. Just because you decided what you got out of it was no longer what you wanted to get out of it doesn't mean it's a bad thing. Indie hipster poserism is so 1990s.

Eideteker, you hit a nerve. And, it would seem, so did I.

I'm pretty impressed with the amount of information about my opinion you were able to glean from my two sentences. Especially the implication that I think MetaFilter is a bad thing that is so over. In fact, I think your response to me speaks more to your defensiveness and potential insecurities about your contributions there (and maybe here) than anything about me.

I don't think I was condescending at all, and I was certainly not dismissing my time there or anyone else's. (That may be how it's done over on the Blue, but I left that behind on purpose.) I used to be an extremely active member at MetaFilter. Top 1 percent. My involvement in the site bordered on addiction, such was the constant attention and participation I gave it.

Then, during an exceptionally contentious and nasty period on MetaTalk (where all the real junkies hang [or at least hung] out), I realized that my relationship with the site was unhealthy, and that the animosity and detached cruelty displayed on the site was affecting me personally. So when MetaChat came along, I jumped over, and I've rarely looked back.

I'm much better for it, and MetaFilter has trundled right along without me. I still encourage people to check it out (well, Ask.Me, mainly) and occasionally check in on Ask.Me (I've even got a question I might ask soon), and I have a friendly relationship with mathowie and many people who I met on the site and continue to talk to. Hell, if not for MeFi, MeCha would not exist, and that would be a sad thing, indeed.

So yes, I think that obsessive participation in anything does border on disease, and I'm glad that I was able to recognize that behavior in myself and stop it. If you want to take my personal statement as some sort of snobbery, that's fine for you. This is the last I'm going to dwell on it.

It will, however, reflect on my future interactions with you: "Oh, he's the one who jumps to conclusions and then picks fights based on them."

My mefiversary will be on April 30, I'll be turning 6!

My contribution index is only 1.55

Sigh

For what it's worth, I read that as meaning, "Then I got over being bothered about where I place in some artificial contribution index ranking", rather than, "Then I got over MetaFilter, isn't it shit?"

Oh and drezdn, it appears that we are practically MeFi neighbours. My CI's only 0.60, though.

I was about to call out dodgygeezer as my bitch, but he's 35 days older in MeFi time than me.

I haven't found much that I want to post to the blue in a while, and I try to keep my comment:post ratio between 3 and 4.

As far as AskMeFi is concerned, I clearly suffer from Male Answer Syndrome.

And yet, I don't really stand out.

chrismear, that works too.

I'm 0.02. If I'd signed up when I first went there I'd prolly be in the hundreds and hundredths.

I explicitly stated I wasn't trying to pick a fight. If you don't hold the attitude I spoke against, why would you be offended? Relax, I don't think less of you; though I'm sad that now you think less of me.

Thanks for explicating your sentiment, though. I can understand your statement in a different light now. Which is great, because all of those things I said pertain to the attitude, not the person, so you don't have to be personally offended. You're still free to be, if that's what you'd like. I'd rather chalk it up to a misunderstanding.
