Thank you. I hear that noise every year, and I figured it was frogs but was never certain. You can hear them from my house even though they are down by the bog half a football field away. I did notice them just a couple of weeks ago.
Living in the New England woods for so long, I got conditioned to listen for them each year as a real sign of spring. Even though my location now is close to town, I can hear them in a nearby low swampy area near a graveyard.
Another seasonal sign of early spring is the spotted salamander migration. I've never been lucky enough to see it and always seem to just miss it. But on the first really warm rainy night of spring, spotted salamanders migrate by the thousands to the nearest vernal pools to lay their eggs. Apparently in some locations they cover the whole roadway.
