You stand on any Tokyo shinkansen station platform at 11:00 p.m. on weekday nights, watching the hordes of red-faced, inebriated salary men, catching the slow Kodama and Nansuno trains home to dingy little 16² meter "1Room" flats in little outlying districts of Tokyo, after yet another night of client "entertainment," and you understand the desperate lives of a significant fraction of Japan's young male population.
