I just went swimming! It was way fun! Now, how do I get better? [More:]My university has a lovely pool, that I get to use for free. I had been dithering about trying it, because I haven't been in the water for years and while I can easily keep myself from drowning, I don't "swim," per se.

But I had entirely too much fun, and managed to get myself back and forth down the lane for about 45 minutes (though a fair amount of that time was spent resting), and I'm feeling like this may be something I want to pursue. But despite swimming lessons when I was young and having a pool in our backyard when I was in high school, I never really learned the crawl, or anything resembling a real swimming technique.

Is this something I can learn from books? Videos? Websites? Or am I going to have to sign up for lessons?
Personally I'd just keep going back and practice over and over.
By "practice" I mean "have a lot of fun."

Watch other swimmers. Ask questions. Practice.

I feel like I need more basic help than just watching other people, though watching people today did help. I'm not even up to the "I know how to do this, I'm just bad at it" stage; I actually don't really know how to do it. I tried to attempt a crawl today and it... just wasn't happening.

I think signing up for a few lessons would be fun and beneficial.

I can sympathize. I've lived in the water my entire life. While I know how to swim, I can't properly do any of the strokes for any length of time. Unless you count the dog paddle and swimming underwater.

From dame, ages ago, I learned of Masters Swimming. It may be a good option, and for all you know they are already practicing at the pool you're swimming in!

The website is awful noisy, visually, but I bet there's a SF contingent.
