Off to Italy on Thursday I'm going to Tuscany on Thursday with my folks cos my nephew is half Italian and is being christened there. We will be staying in Pisa.[More:] The christening will be in Pescia, where my nephew's nonna and her family are. We will visit Florence and I think Rome, with one day in Venice to be spent mostly on/around the Grand Canal. I have a phrase book and am learning some *very* basic Italian. Is this going to be absolutely exciting or what?!! [she insists to herself] I'm not nervous any more, and I know I'll enjoy it when I get there, but does anybody have any suggestions on how to make the most of my trip, or anything to say to get me more worked up about what could be the most fabulous vacation of my life?
divertiti! :)

Don't feel pressured to see as much as you can in one day just because you're on holiday in a foreign country, or because you want to see more than your timeframe allows. If you're rushing from here to there and scheduling your day, you won't make the most of your trip. Prioritize, walk slowly, avoid the dogshit and elderly tourist groups, and things'll work out.

serena, How exciting! Your trip sounds wonderful!

What always gets me excited is hanging out on the TripAdvisor forums of the particular destination I will be visiting. I also like the Fodor forums and Lonely Planet forums. I especially like to read trip reports. Most are entertaining and informative.

I also like to read fiction that is set in the region I'll be visiting. Have your read 1000 Days in Venice? I haven't been to Venice, but after reading this book, I long to go. I have a copy of the sequel, "A Thousand Days in Tuscany", but haven't read it yet.

Have a fabulous time in Italy.

BTW, want some suggestions for eating in Florence? I can suggest you some good (and cheap!) restaurants, I just need to remember them.

Have an excellent trip! DR, I'd love recommendations for Florence - going there in May, also Rome, Ligouria and maybe Cinque Terre. Yay! I have a gmail account.

If you need recommendations in Rome, I can probably help you out, given a few minor details (budget, travel style, and/or general ages of the group)

Buon viaggio!
