26 April 2007

My Kind of Town! I fly to Chicago tomorrow and am very excited for my first visit.[More:]There's almost nothing I love better than discovering a new place.

Today is a good day - I had a major application due that I hadn't really started properly, and was gonna try to get it done before my trip for a May 1 deadline. I just checked the website and found out the deadline is actually May 31! Repreive! Free pass!

Now I can just think about things for tonight and tomorrow, like what clothes to pack and things I want to do. I've got a new bright orange rolling suitcase, and there's gonna be a meetup, and I will get to see the Field Museum and the FLWright Home & Studio and Hemingway's birthplace. The Cubs aren't playing or I would have tried to get to Wrigley. Oh well. I might also try taking this food tour, and I suppose I have to eat one of those crazy hot dogs.

I also made the smart decision to use my plane time to finish reading this book I've been supposed to review for about, yay, six months or so. It keeps sitting on my coffee table, just...looking at me. Reproachfully.

That's all. I'm just rambling, here. How are you?
I'm jealous! I've got the spring travel bug. :)

Take lots of pics, and have a GREAT time!!

Yay! I hope you love it here and I hope the rain clears up before you get here.

I love Chicago! I lived there briefly in my twenties, and I often think of moving back.

The Field Museum is fantastic, and if you can make time for the Art Institute, do it. Thursday evenings are free, but I usually pay the admission and avoid the crowd.

It's been so long since I visited, and I've been wistfully checking airfares all this month. Say hello to the city for me.

I went to chicago two years ago and loved it. Enjoy your stay! Dress warmly! VERY warmly! When I went (exactly a year ago this week, actually) we saw a cubs game and it was snowing. Snowing, on April 23rd! Go figure. Bring gloves. I wish I had...

Have fun and be sure to tell us all about it!

Miko, your trip sounds fabulous. I love looking forward to and planning for a trip, it's half the fun. Have a great time!

Forget Frank Lloyd Wright and Hemingway -- if you are staying in Oak Park, you will also get to see occhiblu's hometown. Huzzah! :-)

The Wright home and studio tour is fabulous. I think, however, Hemingway's house has been torn down? I might be wrong on that, though.

(The Hemingway house I'm thinking of was torn down decades ago, so if you have information more recent than, like, 1960, you should go with yours!)

Here's the place, occhiblu.

I AM staying in Oak Park, so I'll be sure to tour the Occhiblu Botanical Gardens and Amusement Pier as well. Can't wait!

I'm a Wright junkie and seeing this area has been one of my life goals. I'm already bummed that I won't get to everything. The Robie House might have to wait for another trip.

It must have been one of his other childhood homes I'm thinking of, then. I just remember reading some guide saying they had destroyed the house before he got famous, though with a tongue-in-cheek suggestion that it was in revenge for calling Oak Park "a city of wide lawns and narrow minds."

I love the town, though. Pretty much nothing but good memories. Good, tree-filled memories. There are many, many trees.

Have a blast, Miko! I lived in Chicago for 7 years and miss it (minus the winters) with the kind of deep fondness reserved for certain former lovers. One of the all-time great cities.

I'm having quality time with a crabby tabby and Itunes. Then I'll go lift some weight, write my revolution down in an enormous black book, and sleep at some point.
