04 April 2007

so much for spring [More:]

It has not frosted in about a month here. Most stuff is leafed out, a lot of people have already planted gardens, peaches and other crops have already bloomed/set fruit, etc. My bamboo is starting to shoot (by starting I mean that I counted about 100 little pointy shoots sticking out of the ground an inch or two), I have various annuals coming up from seed here and there in the garden... and out of nowhere we get this monster cold front.

Yesterday it was 82 and today it is 59. And it is getting worse and worse as they change the forecast. They were saying it would hit 32 one night. Now they are saying it will be below freezing every night starting tonight and on Saturday night it will drop to 20f. Tonight's freeze will kill everybody's tomatoes and other garden veggies but when it hits 20 degrees it will kill a bunch of other plants and seriously set back the rest. People with big peach orchards are probably about ready to hang themselves.

It did this a few years ago but it only hit 25 after a month of warm weather and THAT killed quite a few things in my yard that can normally take lows below zero because they were already putting all of their energy into spring growth and then they just never recovered from getting zapped by the cold unexpectedly like that.
Holy crap! It's in the mid to high 80s here but tonight a front comes through and drops us down to the 70s. Easter Sunday is supposed to have a high of 67-boo.

It's suppose to snow today. It's cold.
It was nearly balmy yesterday.

It was beautifully warm on Monday but it's been cold the last two days. I have the heating on now.

I hope the weekend is fine, I plan on going to the coast on Saturday.

It's been cloudy and low 40's for about a week. It will continue to be cloudy and low 40's until at least next Monday.

BLAH.

Weather.com says that the high here today will be 66f and the low 55f.

So why was it 72f when I was driving in at 7am? I'm not a meteorologist and I don't have direct access to Doppler 3000, but isn't 72 > 66?

The cold front is here it is now 66.

It actually supposed to get *cold* this weekend. High 59/Low 43. I call bullshit on that.

It's going to snow here tonight. But on Monday I got fresh chive shoots from my garden and made chive butter with radishes. So the first signs have arrived.

Ah, I'm sorry to hear that, weretable; it's so sad when the hopeful new green shoots get frost-blasted. Hereabouts, we're going to have lows in the teens for the rest of the week, which of the arrrggghhh, but at least nothing's going to get damaged except everyone's tempers and sanity. (Mind you, we had an 82-degree day a week or two ago. Minnesota, you wacky, effed-up place...)

Yup, there's a chill in the air here and I wore my winter coat to work today. We're supposed to get snow this weekend.

According to European folklore cited here, a green Christmas means a White Easter. I'd never heard this before, but it remains to be seen whether the forecasters will be right. They've been wrong before...

Mid-Ohio was glorious the last few afternoons. Now it's windy as hell and pretty chilly as of lunchtime. I lift weights for 1/2 hr after lunch M/W/F and go for a brisk walk around the periphery of our building's parking lot, and "brisk" was like a bad joke. My face and hands started to hurt.

I'm going to have to switch back to winter dress-out mode to speedmarch after work today. Snow flurries are expected over the next couple of days/nights, although the ground's much too warm for it to stick. Outdoor sunrise Easter Sunday services will probably call for an overcoat, gloves, hat and scarf.

Yeah, it's supposed to freeze overnight here for the next few nights. I'm glad I've been dragging my feet on the garden this year; the ground's not even turned over yet and nothing's been planted except some phlox & pansies out front and they can take frost.

That's what you get for messing with that weather machine, weretable.

It's freezing here. My hair was stiff by the time I got to the bus stop. *Sigh*

mgl, pansies are one thing I miss about the South -- they're pretty, they're cheerful, and they're nearly indestructible.

Yep, it's supposed to be in the 40s here for the next few days. Gah.

It's fucking snowing outside.

Were having highs of -5 here but it's supposed to crank up to 13 on Saturday which will be very welcome. It's been snowing both heavily and lightly for the past four days, about 20 centimetres total since the last big melt. The snow is really wet/warm which has been making some interesting icicles:

Ah man, that sucks, weretable.

Monday was freezing and it snowed (Hello, Mother Nature? Didn't anyone tell you it's April?!). It was the first time it snowed in April since I moved here at the end of 2000. The snowpack is one of the deepest recorded since they recorded and everyone is worried about the melt. There are lots of rivers and lakes that tend to flood even with a light melt.

Anyway, Tuesday and today are in the low 50s and it's going to be in the 60s tomorrow and Friday.

Weird freakin' weather.

I cut all of my tulips that still looked halfway decent, they would probably be fine in the cold weather but I was cutting a lot of stuff that it will kill so I thought why not add them to the mix. Made a few arrangements in big vases that I can enjoy for a few days anyway. I thought about trying to get a bunch of straw to protect the bamboo but in order to put it thick enough to protect it, I would need a lot of it and it would be a pain to get it cleaned out to a reasonable depth without breaking the shoots anyway. Shame, this year I was going to finally have a really nice grove. Some of the shoots are ten feet (!) from last year's farthest shoots. But I think it will nuke the little tender shoots when it freezes hard and it is going to be in the low twenties at least two nights. Sux0rs. I just hope it doesn't kill any of my expensive Japanese maples/azaleas/roses/etc since plants sometimes react badly to freezes when they are busy growing like this.

Our forecast has been adjusted: we're going to hit 70f today and tomorrow. Weird weird weird.

Kaylee has really beat our tulips down. I'm not sure any of them are going to bloom. We've had a couple daffodils bloom and they were pretty.
