15 April 2007

Yay, I've seen 5 of 10. That's 5 fewer things to do before I die. What a fucking relief.

This one of the more popular Mefi FPPs. A handful of related links in that thread.

The tree that owns itself shouldn't have been relegated to "bonus" status... I mean c'mon! Autonomy is magnificent!

That said... these are ten very cool trees.

Whoops, I didn't realize it had been FPPd. Oh well, still cool, I hope.

Yeah, didn't mean to be snarky. Just figured I'd point out more interesting tree-related discussion.

I find it fascinating that the specific location of "Methuselah" is kept secret.
posted by mullacc 15 April | 20:58
I thought Methuselah was over in the middle east... I didn't realize it was in the U.S. I also thought it was the oldest living thing, but the "quaking aspen" in this article (those photos are GORGEOUS) is much, much older.

The Baobab is a serious "Dr. Seuss" tree.

Awesome Miko. I never saw it on the blue, so I'm happy you posted it.

I was going to say that I feel lucky to have seen 3 of those. Pup must get around, considering her tender age . . . .

I'm a tree slut. What can I say?
posted by mudpuppie 15 April | 22:57
mudpuppie. .is the Tule Tree one of your 5?
posted by danf 15 April | 23:19
Nope, danf, haven't seen that one.

Images of the Lone Cypress are the property of The Pebble Beach Golf Club.

The Lone Cypress is one of the trees on my list.

I hate the principle of 17-mile Drive, and I refuse to believe that any photos I've taken on that road, after having paid admission to even drive it, are copyrighted by the Pebble Creek Corp. I refuse, I tell you!

Very cool, Miko!

I love this post. I don't go to the blue often so I know I would never have seen it otherwise. These trees are gorgeous.

I have an awesome photo of an old tree on a beach in the Hoh Rainforest. I need to find some way to scan it so I can show you guys. The tree was originally on a cliff above the beach, but the cliff beneath the tree eroded. The tree's roots spanned the gap, holding onto the cliff on either side, keeping the tree from falling into the gap. It's one of the coolest things I've ever seen.

Not a single one of these trees gives anything good to eat!

Good point, ikkyu2. Were I to make the list, pecan trees would definitely be on it.
