Can somebody help me get onto MetaFilter? It's been showing the server-change page now since I found this 'free wireless' yesterday - the change page seems dated to the 29th though so shouldn't it be back? Or is the entire site down? Going to the IP address doesn't seem to work either.
I was able to post on it at the same time as your comment above, BtGoG.

You could try shutting down your browser and re-launching it. (Or even rebooting while recycling your Internet connection for a new IP addy.)

I tried rebooting, relaunching.. remember I'm on Somebody Else's connection so can't get a new IP addy.

I guess I will log in via lynx through one of my shells.

You could put the IP for metafilter.com in your hosts file. 74.53.68.130 metafilter.com

Then, if you're on Windows XP, flush your DNS cache, by opening a command prompt and typing ipconfig /flushdns. You should then be able to do a traceroute to any of the metafilter.com domains at the new IP by typing something like tracert ask.metafilter.com or tracert www.metafilter.com

If you're still having problems, restart your browser after that.

Thanks, paulsc! That worked! I actually had put a previous IP for teh mefi in my etc/hosts file after matt had done some other thing to the site months ago. *hug* Thanks for reuniting me with one of my favourite time-sucks.

Yup, when the server moves you gotta update that hosts file.

Last time he jiggered the DNS, it seemed to solve the problems for me that it used to have, so I dont have it in mine anymore (and rarely experience problmes).
