New Google Thing My Maps - lets you customize Google maps with photos, audio, audio, video. The example is about Route 66. Make your own here.
Gah, you know what really, really bugs me about Google Maps? Well, I'm going to tell you.
GMaps resize when you use your mouse's scroll wheel. I use my scroll wheel to SCROLL. So when I try to scroll down, I have to wait 5 seconds while Google repeatedly redraws the map, and then it ends up so microscopic as to be a view of the earth from Saturn. Drives me NUTS.
This sounds cool and all, but it's too hard to remember not to use the scroll wheel, so I finally just had to leave it alone.
kinda neat, because I end up driving more than I really like I had been thinking for a awhile to make a google map mashup rating stretches of highway based on drivability, scenery, danger etc... this will make the project that much easier
I hate that too, mudpuppie. I've never understood it - there are button controls for resizing and that works perfectly well. It would be one thing if it were quick, but it's not, and you have to hang for seconds. Hate it.
This is what I was looking for when I asked this. Platial.com was suggested to me and I gave it a whirl but despite a very helpful and communicative developer working on it, it never quite worked right.
I use GMaps a lot, but yeah, I get burned by the scroll wheel thing a lot too.
I just wish Google would integrate their services better. They only just this week added a link to Google News Archive from the regular Google News (i.e. current) interface. And as long as I'm at Google News, why not give me instant access to my News Alerts? And so forth. It's nice they want to pretend this isn't their core business (being a portal) but if that's so don't do it at all. Doing it badly or stochastically is lame.
