Ask MeCha: Is there a lo-fi version of this? [More:]I've always wanted a nice, basic water bottle that I can keep at my desk and that somehow tracks the amount of water I comsume in a day.

I've often thought of just keeping a post-it note near my cup and marking down in hatch-marks to see how close I get to the recommended 64 ounces, but I'd prefer something more reusable (hypothetically, say, a bottle with a dry-erase panel where I can mark down how many times I've refilled).

Though cool, the hydracoach is a little too fancy for me. I am not beyond hacking my own solution. My husband just suggested I hot-glue my knitting row counter to my favorite bottle. Any other ideas?
You could put charms or little knotted ties of embroidery floss on a very basic scrunchie and keep it on your bottle like a "this is my bottle, thief" wine charm, and move one over abacus style every time you refill.

Stick a piece of tape on the bottle, then make hashmarks on the piece of tape.

Or get a 16-ounce bottle, and then you'll just have to remember a number between zero and three.
