Off-gassing IKEA kettle My super-cheap aluminum tea kettle won't stop smelling like plastic. Any ideas? [More:] before I resort to shelling out actual money for an actual tea kettle?

I got this super cheap one because it's just to take to the beach and to knock around in my trunk.

I keep boiling and boiling water to see if it'll go away but so far no good. I thought it was the handle smelling, but it seems to be coming from inside.

And why would an aluminum kettle smell like plastic anyway? Would they line it?
Boil some vinager and baking soda?

I might try that. It won't screw up the aluminum? I've never had aluminum anything before.

Hmmm?

Not sure. It removes most smells but I don't know if it would damage aluminum.

Still, if it is that bad smelling what difference would it make?

Vinegar won't damage aluminum.

I'd be careful putting both vinegar and baking soda in there at the same time.

Vinegar will react very slightly with aluminum, especially if you're boiling it, but I think the aluminum acetate will stay in solution and rinse right out.
