31 December 2015

A very corny collection of New Years movie clips And that completes my December musical contributions!
The future of Metachat See below.

30 December 2015

wrap up How was your winter holiday? How was your year? What are your new year's plans?

29 December 2015

The joy of rediscovering you... Hey there, MetaChatters (? MeChats? MeFiChas? - do we have a nickname?) Just wanted to say that I used to pop in here a few years ago, but somehow, I stopped doing so. Kept meaning to come back and check out Chat, but for whatever reason, I kept forgetting...or something!? I had forgot how much I love the casual, random conversations over here. Great to be back!
Festive thanks! As the month winds down, I would like to thank everybody who contributed some music for December. I thought everything posted was just great, and that festiveness and jollity was achieved!

28 December 2015

Progressive Lenses are Driving Me Crazy Upgraded to progressives from just prescription reading glasses. The distance part is amazing, a world of difference. The close-up for reading is really weird and only seems in focus in a very small area. Everything I've read says "you get used to it" but it's been a week and a half and it's making me nuts, constantly repositioning my head in every conceivable way to find the sweet spot. Any tips?
Think I'm going back to the Optometrist this week.
A year end list. Things I found out still exist in 2015!

Today, at work at the famous used bookstore, I was waiting at the elevator, when I saw DEE FUCKING SNIDER, lead singer of my beloved Twisted Sister. He looked busy, so I didn't ask for a picture or an autograph. I merely tapped him on the shoulder and said "I saw you open for Iron Maiden when I was 14." He looked me up and down and said "Looks like you turned out OK."

Dig ya, Dee.
Christmas with Bing & Frank. Saw this on tv last night. Cheesy, but good clean fun. Even though it was made for TV in 1957, when not a lot of people had color sets, they filmed it in color, brilliant and vibrant color actually. I totally want some of that punch Frankie's serving.
My favorite Xmas carol Wishing you all peace and contentment, dear bunnies.
Sending love and good wishes to mightshould. (Plus some baby bunnies sleeping in glasses.)

Thinking of everyone who is missing a loved one at this time of year.

23 December 2015

Angels We Have Heard On High I know this carol as 'Angels From The Realms Of Glory", but I like these words more. The acapella singing is crystal pure.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof. The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. Google makes Christmas creepy.
Christmas Snoopy! If you are of a certain age, you've probably heard this 60s song by the Royal Guardsman about Snoopy fighting the Red Baron. Were you aware that there was a Christmas followup? It's heartwarming & rockin', I tell ya.

22 December 2015

Don't Shoot Me Santa A bit of Christmas cheer from The Killers.
In The Bleak Midwinter One of my favourite carols.

21 December 2015

OMG! PLUSH BUNNY! What? You say bunnies are not Christmas-related? Haven't you ever heard of Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny?
How long did you have daylight today? I wonder what time the sun came up and went under where you live.
Here's a whole Christmas album. Christmas with the Williams Brothers. Bob, Don, Dick, and you may have heard of the youngest, Andy.

Friday question NOT from the book of questions So, if you celebrate Xmas, what's the first thing you are going to be doing, once out of bed/washed, this coming Xmas morning?
Brass for Christmas.

17 December 2015

Would anyone like to own a movie theater? Write a good essay, and it could be yours! Catch: it's in a rather small town in northern Maine.
Gloria in Excelsis Deo Oh, this is so beautiful. I loves me some Baroque music.

16 December 2015

See Amid the Winter's Snow Since we're talking snow . . .

15 December 2015

Snow. None at my house yet. :(

14 December 2015

Beware, Nutcracker fans. This is really kind of terrible, so naturally I had to post it. Fred Waring and a lot of singers present The Nutcracker Suite. This link describes the lyrics as "charming." I'm not exactly charmed, but maybe you will be. (Again, another scratchy recording, but I think that helps.)

13 December 2015

12 December 2015

Overly happy musical latke recipe. Happy sixth day of Hanukkah!

11 December 2015

Friday question NOT from the book of questions Inspired by the Secret Quonsar thank you thread on Metatalk -- what present have you given or are you planning to give that you've enjoyed planning for the most?
ChristmasWaltzChristmasWaltzChristmasWaltz. I originally planned to post Doris Day's Christmas Waltz, and then I remembered I'd posted it a few years ago, so I looked up Peggy Lee's version, and then I remembered that Mel Torme had a nice version, and then Oh My Goodness look how many people have recorded that song! Even Susan Boyle!
The tale of a Hanukah party and the marijuana in the latkes . . . Notice that Santa was there too! Happy fifth day of Hanukah!

10 December 2015

Bring me a man this Christmas. The wonderful Weather Girls sing Dear Santa. Also some awesome gowns.

09 December 2015

08 December 2015

07 December 2015

More Hanukah music Featuring nerdy Jewish guys with nice voices. Happy first day of Hanukah, all!
Not festive music, exactly. But I heard this on the radio yesterday and it's just so amazing that something This Not Right exists that I had to post it: Don't Think Twice, It's All Right, as covered by The Wonder Who (a.k.a. The Four Seasons).

06 December 2015

A Giftstravaganza, for DanF.

05 December 2015

Wassup? What's been going on in your day/life?
In the Bleak Midwinter A poem by Christina Rosetti, set to music by Gustav Holst. Lovely Christmas carol, many choral versions on youtube, this is Chanticleer.

04 December 2015

Friday question NOT from the book of questions Assume it will rain hard all day tomorrow. What will you be doing with your day?
I can relate to this sentiment. Today's bit o' seasonal music is Little Jack Frost Get Lost, by Bing Crosby & Peggy Lee. This recording came out in 1952.
Photo Friday: This is the end...?

02 December 2015

Etta James - Take It To The Limit Yes, that Take It To The Limit, the Eagles song, given an awesome gospel twist.

I heard Etta James sing this on the radio some years ago, when she was backed by a full gospel choir. You can't imagine ...
Do people want to continue with Photo Friday?
More holiday music! Today's offering is Dig That Crazy Santa Claus, by the wonderful Oscar McLollie & his Honey Jumpers. Record's a little scratchy, but that won't keep all you hepcats from dancin'!!

01 December 2015

Another Xmas music post I like the sense of anticipation in this piece, and all the holiday lit settings.
Welcome to a musical December! Not every day, but lotsa days, I (and hopefully some of you!) will be posting songs for the season. Let's start off with something simple, classic, and sexy: Eartha Kitt singing Santa Baby.

(I just love this album cover, by the way.)

What are some things or people that you have a "thing" for? When my National Park Service magazine arrived the other day, I said, "I have a thing for the National Park Service!" It's true, I love following what they're doing on a national level. I also have a thing for Rose Wilder Lane/Laura Ingalls Wilder, Shirley Temple, Handel's Messiah, and Full House Reviewed. You? Creative Challenge As part of a work project where we're going to be a Christmas tour, I need to decorate a Victorian room along the theme "Seven Swans a-Swimming." I'e found lots of die-cut swans to make paper ornaments from, and also some glittery swans on sleds as ornaments. But what I else could I do to really work that theme into the decor? I'm not the greatest with floral display but I would tackle it for a clever idea. The danger with this theme, of course, is that it comes out looking like a tacky wedding! Thanks for any creative ideas you can offer.

Tuesday 3-point status update:

16 May 2015

Fabulous day here. After I finished work, a friend who's visiting picked me up and we went to late lunch and enjoyed decadent fresh made vidalia onion rings and burgers. Ran a couple of errands then came home and took a rare but much needed nap.

Later in the day, I replaced the ignition coils in car (easy fix.)
Late in the day hung out laundry and took cat out in her harness; then we sat out while kitty explored. The weather was perfect : low 70's, light breeze and few bugs. We finished the day sitting out there eating cheese and crackers accompanied by nice wine and jazz music. Overall, a beautiful day.

Finally finished a frustrating fable... Have you ever picked up a book, and ended up being relieved that it was over, simply because it exasperated you so much? Yes, I just fininshed "Ahab's Wife: Or, The Star Gazer" by Sena Jeter Naslund. 666 pages (yes, really) of too much existential ramblings, interwoven with a completely unbelievable story line. Thank goodness I got it at the used book store, and didn't pay full price for it.

What have been your most frustrating books?

What should I plant? There's a windowbox-sized planter hanging on the side of our deck. I figure I might as well take advantage and plant something in it. BUT WHAT? This is northern NJ, it's partly to fully sunny on the box, and I would like perennial flowers. What would be pretty and not too easy to kill?
