Friday Question NOT from the Book of Questions What do you think is a big waste of money?
I think clothing bearing commercial logos, including most sports team clothing, is a gigantic waste of money -- hey, why don't those folks pay us to advertise their wares?
Buying lunch every day instead of bringing food from home. I hate when I can't pack a lunch and have to buy- I hate waiting for the food to come once I'm already hungry, and I hate having to decide when I'm hungry as opposed to already having something ready for me.
I also hate it when I forget to take lunch into work. The cafe options at work are cheap but too carby. Fortunately we have a couple of supermarkets near the office where I can buy fruit and snacks, but it's not usually exactly what I want.
I think most 'designer' stuff is a waste of money, particularly when so much of it's mass-produced.
Diamond rings. From mefi I got the impression that US mefites are more traditional than we are in the NL in expecting a guy to spend a months salary on a ring. I don't think I'd mind spending that much money on the love of my life. But diamonds are inherently worth very little and their token expenditure as proof of love is the result of de Beers marketing. Probably the most effective marketing ever.
I could never bring myself to throw that money away like that.
Wrt Keurig: it's the Dutch word for 'neat'. So it's strange to hear that that's a US brand. But then the Dutch had the reputation in the 17th century for being neat. So it is to be expected that that would be given as a family name when Napoleons census counters came knocking.
