Weird NYtimes links. Why suddenly have ordinary words on this page become highlighted and underscored and link to NYtimes articles? For example, in the first sentence at the top there, "informal," "touch," "base," and "post" have all turned blue and link to stupid things on nytimes.com. What gives?
Actually it isn't just nytimes, it's other stupid stuff too.

It's malware, JanetLand. Do you have CCleaner and Malwarebytes installed? If not, download both (free version is fine) and run them. You've got some virus junk on your system that is doing this. Been there, hated that, but it's pretty easy to fix.

I have now downloaded and run both, but the stupid problem persists. I hate the internet.

Can you take a screenshot? There are different versions of this problem and there's a chance of diagnosing it by the way the underlined words look (color, any arrows, etc)

I've got one more for you to download and try - Ad-Aware. This one specializes in adware which is what does the underlining.

Even if you get this junk off your computer, it's still a good thing to have these programs as you'd need them in case of a future attack.

Another way you can go about this is to manually uninstall the programs that have auto-installed themselves, usually piggybacking on a download you did want, or hiding in some stupid website you accidentally clicked. The only thing about this method is that sometimes these programs leave traces in other parts of your system that uninstalling can't fully remove. Still it may bring things under control for you. But try Ad-Aware first.

It might just be a browser extension gone wild. I would start with disabling all extensions in your browser to see if the problem persists. I have thought malware a ton of times when it was just that some dodgy add-on got installed in Firefox or Chrome.

It is an add-on but it's adware. You can disable your add-ons but then you can't use even the ones you like - so you really have to uninstall the adware, and ideally scrub your registry, etc., to get rid of all of it.

It's difficult to get rid of. But possible. I've done it but no longer remember what it was that worked. Possibly something from Deezil's profile.

My co-worker that that in Chrome and it turned out to be an extension that had gotten installed somehow.

How's it going?

Not much luck with the malware scrubbing software. I bought a new computer instead.

Okay, not really. I did buy a new computer, but not for that reason. :) But I think I'm gonna go Linux on the new machine.

What OS and what browser are you using?

Here's a thread on the issue that might help.

That'll teach 'em!

I've never run Linux but it seems like it could entail a fair amount of work just raw. What about going right to Ubuntu? Supposed to be pretty friendly. Still looks like Firefox is the browser, so you might get browser hijackers and unwanted add-ons still from time to time. I really don't know.

I have a Linux guru on call, so I think it'll be okay.

Sometimes it seems to me I don't even need a computer in the house at all. I can check my email on my kindle, and other things like banking and bits of shopping I can do on my lunch hour at work. Interesting thought.
