Making this for a brunch on Sunday. On a scale of 1 to 10, how crazy would I be to use hot dog buns for the bread?[More:]No, I probably won't, but I'm tempted. We have a huge bag that will go bad otherwise, you probably wouldn't know by looking since you tear them up, and I'm curious about how it would taste. Are they too soft, sweet, something else?
I think they'd be too soft, given that the recipe calls for sourdough or French bread, both of which have fairly hard, chewy crusts.

You could always make a little tester first to see how it turns out.

Alternatively ...

You could also leave them out of the package to dry out some before use. I wouldn't toast the buns, just let them get hard. That would be better than letting them go to waste.

Now I am leaning toward using them. Surely enough butter and cream makes anything good!

Yeah, I think Senyar has it; white hot dog buns will just turn to mush in this recipe. Not bad mush, but probably lacking in textural contrast.

Hot dog buns freeze well.

Er, I think this is a 9. Go for something with body, like French baguettes.

Now I'm swinging back! I think I will pick up French bread.
