Band Names. Did you know that the name "Foo Fighters" came from the American (military, I guess) term for an "unidentified flying object" during WWII? You probably did, but I didn't. For other puzzling band names, you can look up their origins here (A-Z list page). And if you haven't seen it, here is Brainwashed's Canonical Guide to Weird Band Names. Looking to name your band? You might give this band name generator a spin. (I'm trying to decide between "Catalyst of the Taz Mistake", and "Lymph Taz".) Also...[More:]

We've often said stuff like "that would make a good band name" around this site. We ought to collect those, maybe, and make our list of mecha band names for the wiki.
Okay, here's what I could find so far:

Super Mario Nation - iconomy

The Chubbettes - iconomy

Dildo Doherty - PinkStainlessTail

Pineapple on Pizza - Eideteker

(taz, why the hell isn't this on Metafilter proper?)

I think the band name of the moment has to be "The Leafy Green Nimoyspheres of Wisdom"

I think of loads of them though, and then forget them when I come down.

Favourite band name ever: A new band that's cropped up in my town, called the "Guantanamo Bay City Rollers".

oooh, that's much better than The Falafel Mafia which for some reason cracks me up.

I should have used the band name generator when we had to change the name of my band.

We had to change it due to trade mark concerns. Being in a band in Australia means, if you want to get paid, registering as a business for the GST tax. There was already a buisness with the name of our band, so in the interest in securing a legal drinks rider, we had to register as something else. I wanted Black Japan, inspired by the wood stain I used on my loungeroom floor, but there's already a band called that, so we went for Black Daphne.

I remember my old band. One day, when we first started, I came up with the name Incubus. Then, we happened to wander through the record store on the way to McDonalds and were...dissapointed. So we called ourselves Cause for Concern. Little were we to know there was a female folk duo in San Fransico called that. They actually emailed us, complaining about the duplication, but by that stage I was singing (screaming) Holiday in Cambodia on stage after 12 beers and we had not long to live as a band. Good times, good times.

I like "Black Daphne"!

Oh, Jimbob, I thought about it... and even though I didn't see it in the IP results that come up on the "post a link" preview, I figured it probably had been posted before... and I was way too lazy to do a whole scour-the-yahoo-results pages for something as difficult as "band names".

Here's a good/funny MeFi bad band names thread from 2003, with a comment link to the Ten Thousand Statistically Grammar-Average Fake Band Names page.

Paging Slack-a-go-go!
My first page?!?

I love fake band names. It's the closest I get to being in a band. Here are few I've used in the past:

Dwight D Weisenheimer
Juice Box Hero
the Laughing Accountants
Maximum Henway
The 1919 Boston Molasses Flood
the Gastronauts
Built to Cut
One Handed Library
Lesbian Speedway
Kickshaw Carryout
MonkeyWench
Paste Parade
P King Cheap
the Cambell Soup Cannes
Revolving Buck Henry

Somehwere I have a few folders from highschool and college filled with thousands of fake song and album titles and a few dozzen fake band discographies. I forgot how much free time I used to have.

"Spiny Norman" was probably the silliest band name of a band I've ever been in, with "Knife Skills" as maybe the coolest. They're still a band, too (w/a whole different rhythm section). I've also been in "Aspect Ratio", "Hive Mind Trio", "Cottonwood", "Ore", and now my new band "Division of Planes". I hate the whole process of naming a band. I hate when it all devolves to the point where people are so tired of saying "how about ...." that they get to the point of being like "how about we call the band 'how about'..." Or you start flipping through books and pointing to any phrase on the page and being like "'Adrian Felt' let's call ourselves that!" Ugh.

// ends unusually cranky sounding rant.

Anyway, thanks for the links they brought back memories and were, I admit, fun. :)

There are two other musical "acts" with the same name as my band (the vibemerchants). One electronica duo that went through names like toilet paper and one bunch of guys that recorded some stuff a few years ago in someone's garage and decided to name themselves.
Neither of them are using it anymore though and we've never heard from anyone. So I consider it ours.

Plus, I have the dotcom, so they can suck it.

Great band names I have known:
The Uncalled Four (those were friends of mine who named themselves when a cop stopped by and said, "You know boys, I like music, I even play the sax, but this kind of noise is really uncalled for.")
The Imposta Rastas - just a bunch of white boys playing reggae
The Dow Jones Industrial Blues Band
Instant Siberia (I named that one)

I can imagine the bluegrass band name generator:
