Photo Friday: Objects With Faces
"Dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria! "
I'm pretty sure this is what Dr. Venkman was worried about :)

The theme for this week's Photo Friday is Objects With Faces. This can be literal (e.g. a doll, mannequin or ventriloquist's dummy) or some other abstract item that looks as if it has a face.

As the last person
of the modern era to maintain a refusal to integrate the word "shit" into his vocabulary, I am (ever so slightly) vindicated by the faux-pas in this CNN clip

This person from my high school on facebook
tends to evoke a sentiment otherwise almost alien to me: ENVY. It's not that I'm a stranger to insecurity or maybe even jealously, but envy is a special case of such sentiments, it's almost a grievance.→Read more...

The thing about Poetry.
so I've been getting into reading (and reflecting on) more poetry lately. And I saw something interesting--you know, that Larkin poem
, "They f- you up, your mum and dad / They may not mean to, but they do"?--the other day Rachel Maddow→Read more...

The Jeff Effect
The perils of typecasting:
Part of what I think of as a great feat acting is the ability of disappear into a role. I find it continually amazing how little things can manipulate one into thinking someone is likable, attractive or creepy, but some people, despite seeming to do everything right in transforming into a different character stubbornly remind me of one character.→Read more...

Where have all the WHO gone?
It's a post on Romenesko's journalism blog about a certain trend for lookalike headlines, but when I saw the first example, I knew I had to bring it here. :)

I read this poem by Auden
a couple days ago and can't get it out of my head: Musee des Beaux Arts
. Even the phenomenon he's talking about is so universally true, I can recall experiencing how jarring it feels for a horrid day for me to be bracketed by the ordinariness of the goings-on around me for everyone else.

Weekend 3-point update : 1. Hell neighbour upstairs is still denying that his flat is on the market and that he's moving, despite the estate agents confirming it's been sold. Does he think nobody's seen it on the internet? I was home on Tuesday when the buyer's surveyor came round. I'm hoping it all goes through and that I get a nice neighbour.
2. I bought a beautiful Italian silk blouse in a charity shop today. It's a lovely shade of dark green, and so I have my Christmas outfit all sorted. And it was only £2.25.
3. Tomorrow is Bikram in the morning, then brunch with a friend.
3(a) On Monday I'm working from home because the Tour de France is passing my road and I can't get to the station - the road will be closed from early morning to early evening. I'm excited at being able to see the cyclists and hope they don't whiz by in too much of a blur.
Google Art Project's robots
pause in front of picture frames in museums to take photographs. Sometimes, they stop in front of mirrors and take "oddly compelling" accidental selfies
. I feel like this phenomenon would be a poetic scene in a sci fi movie...

Good night, Hazel.
I had to bury our wild rabbit today. Since moving here two years ago I have spent almost every morning watching this bunny hop around our flower beds and gloat at our cats. Today I found her peacefully laying just beyond the flower bed.
Friday Question from the Book of Questions -- on Thursday! Because tomorrow is a holiday for us US-ers . . .
So -- in a nice restaurant after a great meal, you get the check and notice you weren't charge for an item. Would you tell your waiter/waitress? Why/why not?

The theme for this week's Photo Friday is Sports. After all, it's the World Cup & Wimbledon, the Commonwealth Games are about to start and I'm sure there's all sorts of other sporting events happening around the world, even if it's just a school sports day.
So let's see your Sporty photos on Friday!
