This is Sadie. She is in the hospital. Please send good vibes to Sadie![More:]My little cat has been having a rough couple of months. She fractured a tooth, unbeknownst to us, and that exposed the pulp and the root. Ouch! But we didn't know. It became painful, and then inflamed. Over the last many weeks she has eaten less and less and lost an incredible amount of weight - almost half her weight. She has had trouble drinking water, too, and got very dehydrated. She has grown really weak and worn out. For various reasons the doctor wanted to postpone oral surgery until she looked a little stronger, but she couldn't really get stronger without enough eating and drinking.

So she had surgery yesterday morning. Came through OK, ate and drank a little on her own. But she's still really down and out. I visited her for an hour today, and she was limp, and so tired, and just...beat looking. She needs to eat hearty. We are hoping her appetite will kick in as her mouth heals and is less painful. I'm worried about her; she's my first pet, my best friend, and a special funny little kitty. Please send your good wishes.
It's so sad when kitties are sick and they just get limp and listless. With any luck she's getting good pain drugs. My thoughts are with you both.

I'm sorry to hear that.

Is there any way to force feed a cat/make sure that they can't barf it up long enough?

Thanks, guys. Your good wishes make me feel better. :) I'm hopeful she'll come home tomorrow, muddgirl. BtGoG, I actually was feeding her with a little syringe before the surgery. I have to say it wasn't her favorite thing, but it does get some food into her.

Sadie will pull through this with flying colors - she's a champeen kinda gal with moxie, verve and vim! She'll be back to ordering us around in no time.

She's strong, like ox!

Poor Sadie! Sending purrs and whuffles from our three cats and a dog. Once she gets the medicine in her, you'll be surprised how quickly she'll bounce back!

Go, Sadie, go!

When my big cat was a wee bruiser, he had a few bouts of some unidentified bug that caused him to stop eating and drinking. He'd get very dehydrated and would vomit (more than usual). The vets did subcutaneous hydration once or twice.

But the key to getting him to eat again? Baby food. From a spoon. Chicken or turkey. It was the only thing he'd eat, and it would nurse him back to health.

So, you know, maybe worth a shot if her mouth is hurting her. Sort of like a milkshake after you get your wisdom teeth out.

Best to you and Sadie both, Miko.

I was so hopeful that after the election, you could get back to normal and your kitty would better and you could enjoy all of the effort you put into juggling her needs and the campaign. So sorry to hear that she's looking so frail and it's hurting your heart. Hopefully, she's on the road to a quick recovery now.

Big hugs to you, and best thoughts to Sadie.

Oh, sweet little Whitey Ford! That does sound stressfull, arse_hat.

Just heard from the doc who said Sadie was a little brighter this morning and ate a decent amount of food. That makes me very hopeful. She might be able to come home tonight if she continues to look like she can take in enough food and water on her own. I'm gonna stock up on gravy, baby food, and her favorite, chiknnnnnnnn.

Thanks for the vibes, everyone. I think they're working!

Mudpuppie for the win on the food suggestions!

Sadie came home tonight. Looking significantly better than yesterday, but still pretty weak and frail. She needs to eat and drink more. She picked at some of her food, and drank some water, but I want to see her really eating. I tried the gravy (mild interest; it smelled totally awesome to me but she was happy with a few small licks). And then just now I tried the baby food. Whoa Nellie! She was all "Wait, what's THAT you got there?" and went over and took some BIG bites. The most enthusiastic eating I've seen from her in many days.

What do they put in that stuff? Baby crack? It is amazing that she seems to like it so much (especially becuase to me it smells fusty) but it stands to reason. Baby food is made for people whose teeth hurt and who need calories. Somehow it seems to be nummy to invalid cats as well as hapless human infants. Thanks, pup.
