A movie adaptation of The Forever War with an unknown actor in the lead, and an assistant who will make me sandwiches. Seriously, that book would make a good movie with the right production talent.

Damn it chuck, you stole my movie. Malkovich is too old and too cocky though, Frink should be in his late thirties and kind of nebbishy. Someone like Giamatti or Phillip Seymour Hoffman would work better. Castle is one of those books that I'd really rather not see filmed though because they'd probably add chase scenes and explosions and screw it up totally .

Roger Zelazny's "Lord of Light" and "Creatures of Light and Darkness". They'd suffer badly as movies, and would have to be made as a multi-million-dollar mini-series (with movie-like production values).
Also "Planetary", another mini series.
"The Story of the Eye."
Anything else by J.G. Ballard that Cronenberg doesn't get his hands on first (as I wouldn't be able to top him).
I'd also like to see "Global Frequency" done fully. I've got the pilot somewhere, but they never continued it. Maybe "The Authority", just for the special effects.
I was going to also say "Watchmen", but the book's so graphically perfect that shooting a film of it'd be redundant.

Oh, and about Zelazny, I'd say the Amber Chronicles (the five books with Corwin and the five with Merlin, for kicks) but the politicking would drag the story movement down, and the interpersonal machinations are part of what makes it for me. damn is my connection slow tonight!

I was thinking "Get Smart" with Steve Carrel but somebody beat me to it.

"Bridge of Birds" by Barry Hughart, but unfortunately Mako is dead, he would have been a great Master Li.

Also, "Amnesia Moon" by Jonathan Lethem, "The Dragon Never Sleeps" by Glen Cook and many others.

I love "Lord of Light" to pieces, but I don't know if it is at all filmable, even as a mini-series.

Hey, not to nitpick but you need to cast your films. Unless you're planning on doing some sort of avant-garde piece without such bourgeois conceits as, y'know, actors. In which case, good luck to you.

For some reason, I'd like to direct a version of Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio.

grr. See, I really don't follow stars, or can really remember their names without straining. The ones that I do remember, you know, say like The Clooney, or Brad Pitt, or Kirsten Dunst (watched Spiderman 3 last night, which is why she sprung to mind.) I don't really see as fitting the bill for any characters. The stars would probably have to be European or non-A-list actors. Naturally, I'm not really sure about the European actors thing, but on the whole I've found that they're more... interesting to look at, rather than the Hollywood thing that gets to repetitive. Take the cast in Immortel (ad vitam) or City of Lost Children. What wonderful faces. If it were Hollywood, we'd have to have some glamour thing wearing too much makeup, and showing too much flesh (ie. the girl in Transformers).
Also, Creatures of Light and Darkness would look great shot in the same style as Renaissance, though in colour, now I think about it.
