DEVO on the show "Fridays" playing "Jerkin' Back And Forth"(1981). I saw this the night it aired, when I was 16 and already a ginormous DEVO fan. It blew my tiny little mind. →[More:]

DEVO were on "Fridays" twice (1980 1981), and both were actually amazing performances.

For our younger bunnies: "Fridays" was a live show (you know what night it aired) and was ABC's attempt to compete with SNL; it was never SNL but was awesome in its own right, and was also the canvas on which Andy Kaufman painted his magnum opus. I saw those episodes, too.

Great show. Better than Saturday Night Live for the two years it was on. I was already a big fan of Producer Jack Burns from Burns & Schrieber (earlier he'd done a team with George Fucking Carlin!). Larry David was on it as performer and writer; he worked with Michael Richards and writer Larry Charles leading to much of the future Seinfeld. Seriously funny.

I missed out on Fridays, cuz I was away at a boarding school and had limited access to TV. I loved DEVO though.

Devo on Fridays was absolutely monumental. I knew their music and really liked them, but seeing them on Fridays opened my world quite a bit. Fridays were definitely more adventurous with their musical guests than SNL was. The Clash, Plasmatics, Split Enz, Graham Parker, Jim Carroll, the Blasters, the Jam, King Crimson, the Busboys, and the Boomtown Rats to name just a few. I really wish they could put out a complete DVD set of just the musical performances. I would buy that in a second.
