What? Is this intended as a counterpoint to the Donna Summer post?
Sorry, but I'm one-degree-separated from Rick Dees and not so proud of it. One of my best friends from college radio spent a year as NewsGuy on Dees' radio show, sadly the peak of his radio career (and he has stories!!!).
It is worth noting, if you didn't already know, Dees was a "Wacky Morning DJ" in Memphis when he made that record, and when it hit #1, he leaped up to the L.A. radio market, which has not been able to get rid of him since. He can be heard far and wide on his own "Weekly Top 40" countdown show, created when his station lost Casey Kasem's American Top 40. A far better hustler than entertainer.
I remember being in a Pizza Hut w/ my mom in Augusta, GA when I was 11 or 12 years old. The waitess said to me, "I'll give you a dollar if you'll go over to the jukebox and play ANYTHING that's not Disco Duck." I accepted the offer. (Back then, a dollar got you 3 or 4 songs.)
I did not intend it as a counter to the Donna Summer post. My boss had misheard me and thought I said disco, so he said disco duck. And I was like, "What?" then I saw the video and I was all like, "Wha... HAHAHAHA!!!"
I have heard Rick Dees' countdown show. I suppose I'm too young to remember him as anything other than a radio DJ, thus my fascination with Disco Duck.
Hey, awesome. This song was one of the first 45s I ever owned, I'm not terribly ashamed to admit.
I mean, I was 7. It was just about suited to my developmental level. And it certainly spurred a whole lot of my classmates to learn duck-talking, which hey, is still kind of bizarrely funny.
